Description
Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) composed Isle of the Dead (Die Toteninsel; Ostrov Mortvikh), Op. 29 in 1908 after being profoundly inspired by a black-and-white reproduction of Arnold Bv?cklin's haunting Symbolist painting Isle of the Dead, which he encountered in Paris in 1907. The mysterious image of a solitary boat approaching a rocky, cypress-covered island prompted Rachmaninoff to create one of his most evocative orchestral works, a symphonic poem whose undulating 5/8 rhythm suggests both the steady stroke of an oarsman and the gentle motion of waves. Throughout the score, the composer weaves quotations of the ancient Dies irae plainchant into a richly chromatic texture, reinforcing the work's meditation on mortality, remembrance, and the boundary between life and death. Rachmaninoff later remarked that had he first seen one of Bv?cklin's original color paintings rather than the stark monochrome reproduction, he probably would never have composed the work. Isle of the Dead was premiered in Moscow on April 18, 1909, under the composer's direction and subsequently revised before publication. Today, it stands among Rachmaninoff's greatest orchestral achievements, admired for its atmospheric orchestration, psychological depth, and masterful synthesis of late Romantic lyricism and Symbolist imagery, and it remains a cornerstone of the twentieth-century symphonic poem repertoire.
