About the Arranger: Alan Baylock

Alan Baylock

Alan Baylock has shaped the landscape of modern jazz education and composition through decades of creative work and mentorship. After 20 years as Chief Arranger for the United States Air Force Band's Airmen of Note in Washington, D.C., he moved to the University of North Texas, where he directs the Grammy-nominated One O'Clock Lab Band. His own jazz orchestra recorded three critically acclaimed albums and toured extensively across the United States over a 15-year span, while his guest conducting has reached more than 100 jazz ensembles at professional, collegiate, and high school levels.

Baylock holds degrees from Shenandoah University (where he later taught as Jazz Composer-in-Residence) and the University of North Texas. His commitment to expanding voices in jazz led him to co-found Brava Jazz Publishing in 2022 alongside composer and arranger Annie Booth, a platform dedicated to publishing and distributing works by women composers and arrangers in big band jazz. His arrangements and compositions have been performed by artists ranging from Melissa Aldana and Joshua Redman to Maynard Ferguson and Arturo Sandoval, and his work extends across genres into collaborations with symphony orchestras worldwide.

Why we love this

Baylock captures the essence of a Strayhorn standard without asking your alto soloist to improvise or navigate technical fireworks. The melodic lines breathe with sophistication, the harmonies move with intention, and the arrangement sits comfortably for Grade 3 ensembles while never sacrificing musical substance. This is writing that respects both the soloist and the supporting ensemble.

What to expect

Isfahan unfolds with the elegance of a Strayhorn ballad arranged for the bandstand. Lush harmonic movement supports the alto melody as it travels through unexpected turns, intimate and assured. The ensemble writing gives space without leaving the soloist hanging, creating an atmosphere of quiet sophistication that asks listeners to lean in and listen.

Who it's for

Directors programming for jazz ensembles with intermediate reading skills and a developing alto saxophonist ready for a featured role. This works equally well for groups preparing for jazz festivals, concert programs, or recordings where a tasteful, lyrical feature is needed.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the alto solo voice against the ensemble by having your sax section play with a lighter touch when the feature enters; this isn't about volume competition but about clarity of line.
  • Watch the trumpet lead range (written A above the staff) in rehearsal and adjust part doubling if necessary to protect the section's comfort and tone quality.
  • Let the ensemble settle into the groove early so the alto soloist can float above a stable rhythmic foundation; lock the rhythm section first, then layer in horns.

How to use it

Pair this as a contrasting feature within a jazz program built around energetic uptempo arrangements, or use it to open a set and establish an intimate mood. Its four-minute duration and emotional weight make it effective on concert programs alongside classical or contemporary work, especially when you want to highlight the artistry of your jazz program rather than its technical prowess alone.

Skills your students will build

  • Phrasing and musical storytelling through a melodic feature
  • Reading and executing harmonic movement with rhythmic accuracy
  • Balancing solo voice against ensemble texture without over-playing
  • Swing feel and groove alignment across rhythm section and horn parts
