Description
These two familiar Irish tunes (Londonderry Air & Galway Piper) offer a different experience for string ensembles who so often are relegated to Baroque music. There is no song in the world more beautiful than Londonderry Air which calls for expressive playing of the highest order. Parts are all in first position range in this song, but rubato of tempo and sensitive musicianship are absolutely necessary for a quality performance. Galway Piper does require skill in third position and rapid bow technique to bring out the excitement of that familiar Irish dance. An optional part for viola is supplied in lieu of 3rd violin.

More about this title

Why we love this

This arrangement pulls string ensembles out of their default Baroque rotation with material that demands genuine interpretive maturity. Londonderry Air forces players to find musical depth within technical simplicity, while Galway Piper rewards ensemble precision with genuine virtuosic payoff.

What to expect

Londonderry Air unfolds with a yearning, sustained quality that invites singers to hum along; its beauty lies in restraint and the space between notes. Galway Piper snaps to life with rhythmic energy and fiddler's exuberance, showcasing the string ensemble's capacity for driving pulse and character.

Who it's for

String trios and small ensembles at the Grade 4 level who have solid first position foundation and are ready to explore lyrical playing with expressive intention. Players with access to third position work will find Galway Piper both accessible and gratifying.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape Londonderry Air with a conductor's attention to rubato and phrase breathing; what reads as simple notation requires constant micro-adjustments in tempo to feel alive rather than mechanical.
  • Establish the rhythmic foundation of Galway Piper in rehearsal before layering the bow articulation; once the pulse locks, the dancers' energy emerges naturally from rhythmic clarity.
  • Record a practice pass of Londonderry Air and listen back for uniformity of vibrato intensity across the ensemble; matched vibrato speeds transform the sound from pleasant to genuinely beautiful.

How to use it

Pair these as a contrasting set in a concert mixing genre and mood, or use them as a bridge between classical and world music studies. Londonderry Air works beautifully in a program focused on lyricism and expression, while Galway Piper fills programming slots where you need accessible joy and audience recognition.
