About the Composer: Jared Barnes

Jared Barnes

Jared Barnes teaches instrumental music across grades 5-12 and has built a reputation for developing ensembles that consistently earn Division I ratings at the IHSMA Large Group Festival. His bands were named Class 1A High School Honor Band for the 2011 and 2019 Iowa Bandmasters Conventions, reflecting his commitment to rigorous musicianship and student growth.

Based in Iowa, Barnes composes works that have traveled far beyond the Midwest. His pieces appear regularly on J.W. Pepper Editors' Choice and Bandworld Top 100 lists, and have been performed at honor bands, festivals, and the Midwest Clinic. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Wartburg College.

Why we love this

Barnes knows exactly what beginning bands can accomplish, and this fanfare proves it. Rather than padding parts with busy filler, each section gets a moment to expand its range and assert itself musically. The contrasting middle section gives young players something genuine to sink their teeth into beyond the opening flash.

What to expect

Opening with bright confidence, the fanfare immediately lets each section step forward and claim space. The middle section pulls back to something gentler and more lyrical, revealing a different side of ensemble playing before the piece reasserts itself with poise.

Who it's for

Beginning band programs looking for material with real concert appeal and pedagogical substance. This works for groups preparing festival entries or building a concert program where every piece can stand on its own.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the opening fanfare so each instrument group projects without drowning out the next entrance. Clarify who has the primary melody in each phrase, then build secondary voices underneath.
  • Shape the middle section with intention. Young players often settle into a single dynamic; encourage them to craft a small arc within their phrase, even when the written dynamic stays constant.
  • Keep tempo steady through the contrast. The shift from bold to expressive can tempt conductors to stretch the pulse; lock in with a clear beat and let the orchestration and dynamic changes carry the musical interest.

How to use it

Open a concert with this to establish energy and excitement from the first measure. Its compact length (1:45) makes it an ideal pairing with longer works, or include it on a festival schedule where you need something that impresses quickly without requiring a full rehearsal block.

Skills your students will build

  • Expanding playing range across all registers
  • Balancing individual lines within ensemble texture
  • Contrasting articulation and phrasing between sections
  • Dynamic control and expressive shaping at the beginning level
  • Executing fanfare-style rhythmic precision
