About the Composer: Roland Barrett

Roland Barrett

Roland Barrett has shaped generations of student musicians through his dual roles as composer and educator. Since joining the University of Oklahoma's music theory and composition faculty in 2001, he has mentored undergraduate and graduate students while maintaining an active creative practice that spans symphonic band, chamber ensembles, and marching band contexts.

Barrett's catalog of over two hundred published works has earned recognition from the Dallas Wind Symphony, countless All-State and All-Region Honor Bands, and national platforms including NPR, the Midwest Band & Orchestra Convention, and the International Trumpet Guild. His contributions to the field have been acknowledged through multiple ASCAPlus awards and the Michael Hennagin memorial scholarship in composition from his home institution.

Why we love this

Grade 1 repertoire rarely offers this level of musical substance. Barrett crafts bold, confident statements that don't condescend to beginning players, making this a program opener that establishes artistic intent from the first rehearsal. The thematic material sits perfectly in young hands while delivering genuine concert impact.

What to expect

Stately and purposeful, with the pageantry of medieval courts reflected in rich harmonic choices that feel substantial despite the accessible voicing. The piece moves with dignity and presence, inviting audiences to sit up and listen.

Who it's for

Beginning concert bands seeking repertoire that sounds professional without requiring advanced technique. This is ideal for first-year programs building their performance library and looking to establish that they play real concert music, not just exercises.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the bold statements across your section leaders so the regal character comes through without drowning out any single line.
  • Shape the musical phrases with intentional breath points; treat this as concert literature, not a drill, and your ensemble will respond accordingly.
  • Use the relatively short duration (1:45) to build confidence with repeated run-throughs and to refine attack and articulation as a cohesive band.

How to use it

Program this early in a concert to set a sophisticated tone and demonstrate that your ensemble deserves serious attention. Its length and Grade 1 difficulty make it an excellent anchor piece for winter or spring programs where you'll also feature more advanced works.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and executing bold dynamic contrasts (fff to pp) on instruments still new to the player
  • Sustaining tone quality across full phrases with pitch stability
  • Ensemble balance and blend in a thematically driven context
  • Responding to musically intentional conducting gestures that shape phrasing beyond rhythm section
