More about this title
About the Composer: Andy Beck

Andy Beck directs choral publications at Alfred Music and has composed and arranged more than 450 vocal works, pedagogical resources, and children's musicals now in active use. His instructional titles (Sing at First Sight, Foundations in Choral Sight Singing, and Vocalize! 45 Vocal Warm-Ups That Teach Technique) are staples in vocal classrooms, and his compositions reach singers across the globe, as evidenced by countless performances shared online.
Beyond the printed page, Beck serves as guest conductor, adjudicator, and clinician for music educators nationwide and abroad. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Music Education from Ithaca College and a Master's degree from Northwest Missouri State University. A trained tenor with deep roots in musical theatre and chamber singing, Beck has been an Alfred Music studio artist since 1992, bringing firsthand performance experience to every piece he writes.
Why we love this
Beck's gift for writing singable, emotionally intelligent melodies shines throughout this collection. Each song balances genuine artistic expression with accessibility, making it possible for young singers to feel like accomplished musicians rather than students working through exercises. The poetry and imagery in these titles spark genuine interpretive choices from performers, turning technical practice into storytelling.
What to expect
These songs inhabit a world of observation and wonder. Nature imagery appears throughout (butterflies, cardinals, lighthouses, shooting stars), yet each poem carries emotional weight without sentimentality. The music unfolds with lyrical grace, inviting singers to linger in quiet moments of reflection or rise into gentle, confident passages. The piano writing is never an obstacle; instead, it creates a safe, musically sophisticated container for a young voice to grow.
Who it's for
This collection serves developing solo singers in middle school and early high school who are building confidence and musicality through carefully crafted, age-appropriate repertoire. Voice teachers, choir directors casting soloists, and private studio instructors will find these pieces ideal for students ready to move beyond unison work but still benefiting from moderate ranges and clear textual connection.
How to get the most out of it
- Let the piano part guide your phrasing. Beck's accompaniment designs are intentional support structures, not mere backgrounds, so listen to how the harmony breathes and shape your vocal line to match that motion.
- Explore the emotional core of each text before settling on a tempo or dynamic shape. A song like "In My Dream" invites introspection, while "Making a Paper Airplane" thrives on playfulness; let the narrative inform your interpretation.
- Work with the recorded accompaniment to internalize steady pacing and harmonic support, then gradually sing through the piano part as you build confidence with both independence and ensemble awareness.
How to use it
Build a solo recital or feature concert around several selections from this collection to create thematic unity without monotony. The diverse imagery and moderate technical demands make these pieces suitable for spring solo competitions, festival performances, or special assembly programs. Consider pairing individual songs with instrumental interludes or brief spoken introductions to deepen the storytelling impact.
Skills your students will build
- Sustaining legit tone across a moderate range (typically designed for comfortable middle-voice placement)
- Shaping lyrical melodic lines with appropriate phrase breathing and musical direction
- Connecting text emotion to vocal interpretation and dynamic choices
- Maintaining steady rhythmic accuracy while responding to piano accompaniment
- Building stamina and confidence in solo performance contexts
