About the Arranger: Carrie Lane Gruselle

Carrie Lane Gruselle

Carrie Lane Gruselle combines deep training in both traditional and Suzuki pedagogies. She earned her Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire and her Master's degree from the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point, where she specialized in Suzuki methodology.

Gruselle brings classroom experience directly into her arranging work. She teaches strings at the elementary and middle school levels for the Appleton Area School District and maintains a cello studio at the Lawrence University Arts Academy, giving her insight into what young musicians can accomplish and what they need to develop as players.

Why we love this

Gruselle's arrangement captures the gentle warmth of this beloved carol while treating it as genuine musical material rather than a simple holiday filler. The innovative harmonies and textural choices offer your students something memorable to play, and the focus on marcato articulation and dynamic shaping gives you concrete, teachable objectives beyond just learning notes.

What to expect

Reverent and warmly luminous. The traditional melody sits comfortably in the hands while the harmonies create an intimate, almost candlelit quality. There's elegance here, not sentimentality.

Who it's for

Grade 1.5 string orchestras looking for holiday repertoire that teaches as much as it moves. This arrangement suits programs that want to develop bowing control and interpretive sensitivity without demanding advanced technique.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the marcato bowing with intention; avoid making every note sound detached and lifeless. Think of marcato as a way to define each phrase rather than a technical exercise.
  • Balance dynamic contrasts against the carol's naturally quiet moments. Gruselle's writing creates space, so let that air breathe.
  • Listen for how the harmonies shift color from section to section. Encourage students to notice where the arrangement surprises them, those moments are the gift of the arrangement.

How to use it

Slot this into winter concerts as a centerpiece holiday offering, or pair it with other carols to build a short Christmas suite. The accessible difficulty level means you can rehearse it without sacrificing time from concurrent chamber or full orchestra work.

Skills your students will build

  • Marcato articulation and control
  • Dynamic shaping and contrast
  • Listening for harmonic color and movement
  • Sustaining tone quality at soft dynamics
