About the Composer: Joseph M. Martin

Joseph M. Martin

Joseph M. Martin studied piano performance at Furman University and later earned a master's degree from the University of Texas at Austin, where he subsequently taught in the Piano Pedagogy Department for five years. His career as a concert pianist took him across the United States and Mexico, including a featured performance with the Guadalajara Symphony Orchestra after winning the Nina Plant Wideman Competition, and a nationally broadcast recital from Ex-convento del Carman.

These days, Martin channels his artistic energy primarily toward church music and worship contexts, composing and arranging works that have resonated in spaces ranging from Carnegie Hall to intimate congregational settings across North America. He lives in Austin, Texas with his wife Sue and their children Jonathan and Aubrey.

Why we love this

Martin's setting has the kind of sincerity and melodic generosity that actually serves the text rather than overshadowing it. The flexible voicing options (TB/TTB/TBB/TTBB) mean you can program this regardless of your section strengths on any given year, and the 11-page length keeps it manageable for rehearsal while still giving you substantive material to work with.

What to expect

Contemplative and grounded, with the kind of harmonic language that feels both modern and timeless. The text sets with clarity and conviction, inviting singers to engage spiritually while maintaining musical integrity throughout.

Who it's for

Men's choirs, mixed choirs with solid tenor sections, and any ensemble looking for accessible sacred repertoire with honest musical craftsmanship. This works equally well for worship settings and concert programs.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the text clarity across all four voice parts; Martin's writing is straightforward enough that diction becomes your primary tool for bringing the theological weight of the words to the listener.
  • Let the harmonic progression breathe rather than rushing through phrase endings; these chords deserve space to resonate.
  • Adjust dynamic ranges based on which voicing configuration you've selected for the performance, as the texture changes significantly between TTBB and lighter combinations.

How to use it

Pair this with other sacred works in a concert focused on Christian texts, or use it as an anchor piece in a worship service where the message and music need to align. The flexible voicing makes it an excellent choice for a mixed concert program where you're uncertain about roster stability.

Skills your students will build

  • reading and executing flexible voicing configurations
  • balancing harmonic blend in four-part writing
  • connecting text expression to musical phrasing
  • maintaining intonation across sustained harmonic passages
