About the Composer: Vicki Tucker Courtney

Vicki Tucker Courtney began piano study at age four and continued her musical training at North Texas State University, where accompanying choirs became central to her development. Her prolific output across multiple genres and ensembles has earned her repeated ASCAP Plus Awards recognition, with over 350 published titles to her name since her first composition was published in 2009.
Courtney works full time as a composer and arranger, creating music for choirs, piano, handbells, and solo voice. She studied directly with Dove Award winner Mark Hayes and maintains an active practice teaching piano and composition to students of all ages. Her work spans both traditional and contemporary worship settings, grounding her compositions in real congregational and choral needs.
Why we love this
Courtney's setting brings fresh immediacy to a nineteenth century hymn text without abandoning what makes the original endure. The arrangement respects the contemplative nature of the words while offering a melodic line that feels both singable and emotionally direct, making this particularly effective for choirs seeking repertoire that bridges generations in worship or concert settings.
What to expect
Contemplative and intimate, this setting creates space for genuine reflection without losing the earnestness of the text. The music unfolds with quiet confidence, inviting singers and listeners into a moment of vulnerability and spiritual honesty.
Who it's for
This arrangement serves choirs and worship musicians seeking a contemporary setting of a familiar hymn. It works equally well for concert choral programs with sacred repertoire and for congregational singing in traditional or blended worship services.
How to get the most out of it
- Allow the harmonic movement to breathe rather than pushing the tempo; the three minute duration gives you space to shape phrases with intention
- Balance the instrumental parts so they support rather than dominate the vocal line, letting the text remain the focal point
- Work for clarity in any divisi passages, ensuring that inner voices articulate their melodic contours distinctly
- Connect the ending without rushing; the final moments benefit from a slight expansiveness that honors the spiritual weight of the text
How to use it
Position this as the centerpiece of a sacred music concert or as a profound closing piece for a worship service. It pairs naturally with other settings of traditional hymn texts and provides a meaningful counterpoint to more jubilant or festive choral work on the same program.
Skills your students will build
