Joseph M. Martin trained as a pianist at Furman University and earned his master's degree in piano performance from the University of Texas at Austin, where he later taught in the Piano Pedagogy Department for five years. His career spans solo recital work, orchestra collaborations (including a performance with the Guadalajara Symphony following his win in the Nina Plant Wideman Competition), and broadcast performances that reached national audiences.
Today, Martin divides his time between concert performances and composing and arranging music for church settings and music conferences. His catalog appears across stages ranging from Carnegie Hall to regional theaters, but his heart centers on creating works that serve congregational worship. He lives in Austin, Texas with his family.
Why we love this
Martin's arrangement brings both dignity and accessibility to this beloved hymn text. The writing honors the spiritual weight of the resurrection message while remaining singable by mixed choirs of varying experience levels, making it equally at home in a cathedral or a smaller parish setting.
What to expect
The music radiates quiet confidence and hope. Martin's harmonies are warm without becoming sentimental, grounding the theological affirmation of resurrection in genuine human emotion rather than sentimentality.
Who it's for
This arrangement serves any SATB choir preparing Easter repertoire, from church choirs to educational ensembles. It works equally well as a standalone anthem or as part of a larger liturgical service.
How to get the most out of it
Establish clarity between the inner voices (alto and tenor lines) in early rehearsals; they carry harmonic interest that supports the sopranos and basses.
Shape the phrase arcs by pulling back slightly at cadence points, allowing the text to breathe and the message to land.
Balance the dynamics conservatively; this text doesn't need overwhelming volume to convey conviction.
How to use it
Place this as a centerpiece in Easter services or spring concerts. It also pairs naturally with other resurrection texts and could frame a program exploring faith-based choral writing across different styles.
Skills your students will build
Reading full SATB voicing and balance
Sustaining phrase length across longer harmonic progressions
Interpreting sacred text with musical sensitivity
