More about this title

About the Composer: John Williams

John Williams stands as one of the most celebrated film composers in history, with an unmatched ability to craft themes that define entire franchises. His work across the Indiana Jones series, Star Wars, Jaws, and countless other films has earned him multiple Academy Awards and a reputation for writing music that combines classical orchestral sophistication with immediate melodic appeal.

Why we love this

Williams' Indiana Jones themes are instantly recognizable and endlessly rewarding to perform. The trombone gets genuinely interesting material here; these aren't background parts but actual melodic moments that let students experience playing music that audiences already know and love. Pairing this with a professional accompaniment CD keeps rehearsals focused and makes every practice session feel like a real performance.

What to expect

You're stepping into adventure. The Raiders March propels forward with swagger and pulse, while Marion's Theme sings with genuine lyricism. Each selection balances the heroic, larger-than-life quality of the films with moments of introspection and character. Playing these themes feels consequential in a way that many student solos don't.

Who it's for

This book works for intermediate trombonists (Level 2-3) who want engaging, recognizable repertoire that sounds polished in performance. It's equally useful for solo recitals, concert band arrangements, or jazz ensemble contexts where you need a trombone feature that audiences will immediately connect with.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lean into the swagger of the Raiders March. This isn't delicate music; let the trombone cut through with a confident, slightly bold tone.
  • Use the demo track to hear how the professional trombonist shapes each phrase. Pay close attention to articulation choices, particularly in faster passages.
  • Balance your sound against the orchestrated accompaniment on the play-along track. The strings and brass will fill the mid-range, so anchor your tone in the lower register without overplaying.
  • The lyrical themes like Marion's Theme demand clean legit work. Slide smoothly between positions and avoid bumpy position shifts that interrupt the melodic line.

How to use it

These selections work beautifully as a concert feature for a solo trombonist, either as a standalone group or interspersed throughout your program. The recognizable titles draw audience engagement, and the professional accompaniment CD means you can present them with genuine polish. Consider programming multiple selections together to create a thematic set, or use them to give your trombone soloist a moment in the spotlight mid-concert.

Skills your students will build

  • Playing over orchestrated accompaniments (balance, blend, independence)
  • Legit tone production in both lyrical and marcato contexts
  • Phrasing and stylistic choices in film music idiom
  • Position accuracy and smooth transitions in scalar passages
  • Sustaining long tones with consistent intonation against moving harmonies
