Joseph M. Martin studied piano performance at Furman University in South Carolina and later earned his master's degree from the University of Texas at Austin, where he also taught in the Piano Pedagogy Department for five years. A accomplished solo recitalist and symphonic collaborator, he won the Nina Plant Wideman Competition and has performed across North America, from Carnegie Hall to regional orchestras in the United States and Mexico.
Martin has shifted his artistic focus toward church music and worship contexts, composing and arranging works that appear regularly in services and conferences throughout the United States and Canada. He brings both classical training and deep liturgical sensibility to his writing, creating music that connects concert craft with congregational purpose. Martin lives in Austin, Texas with his family.
Why we love this
Martin's setting captures the hymn tune with fresh harmonic movement and clear voice leading that allows amateur and experienced singers alike to find their parts. The 13-page octavo gives you enough substance to build a meaningful Easter moment without overwhelming rehearsal time, landing in that sweet spot where good writing becomes memorable music.
What to expect
The piece carries quiet conviction, building from introspection toward affirmation. Martin's harmonic language feels accessible yet sophisticated, with moments of textural interest that keep singers engaged throughout the phrase work.
Who it's for
This octavo works for Easter services in churches where singers have basic sight reading skills and some ensemble experience. It serves choirs ranging from modest volunteer groups to more advanced ensembles seeking repertoire that feels substantial without requiring extensive rehearsal.
How to get the most out of it
Balance the soprano line as the primary melodic voice while ensuring the alto part sings through its independent phrases; the inner voices carry important harmonic color.
Take time with text clarity in the opening phrase; Martin's setting rewards singers who shape each word with intention.
Consider how the dynamic arc builds across the form; resist the urge to peak too early and leave room for the final affirmation.
How to use it
Position this as the anchor to an Easter service liturgy, perhaps bracketed by instrumental interludes or congregational hymns. Its modest length makes it ideal for a church whose choir needs a capable centerpiece without overshadowing other musical elements in the service.
