Joseph M. Martin trained as a concert pianist at Furman University and the University of Texas at Austin, where he later taught in the Piano Pedagogy Department. His performance career has taken him across the United States and Mexico, including appearances with major orchestras and a nationally broadcast recital from Mexico City.
Today Martin divides his time between concert performances and composing and arranging music for worship contexts. His works span from Carnegie Hall to hundreds of churches across North America, reflecting his deep investment in both concert music and sacred music for congregational and choral settings. He lives in Austin, Texas.
Why we love this
This piece captures genuine conviction without resorting to bombast. The text draws its strength from affirmation, and Martin and Angerman match it with writing that feels both accessible and musically substantial for your singers. Six pages of SATB writing that works in real churches and concert settings alike.
What to expect
Direct and grounded. The text carries conviction, and the music steps back to let those words land cleanly without overselling the sentiment. This is affirmation music that trusts both the text and the listener's intelligence.
Who it's for
Any SATB choir looking for contemporary sacred repertoire that speaks to both singers and listeners with clarity and warmth. Works equally well in worship settings and concert programs where you want to close a first half or build toward a finale.
How to get the most out of it
Shape the harmonic progression in the verse section to avoid static blocks of sound; each chord change should breathe and move toward the next.
Balance the soprano line carefully in sections where it carries the primary melodic weight; this is where the message lands most directly.
Let the rhythm breathe in moments of text emphasis; resist the urge to keep everything metrically rigid.
Work dynamics as a choral unit so that layered entries build in intensity rather than creating competing volume levels.
How to use it
Pair this with other contemporary sacred works in a concert focused on faith and courage, or place it as a closing anthem in a worship service where you want something that reinforces a spoken message without overwhelming it. The six-page length makes it a substantial but not demanding addition to a program.
