About the Composer: Joseph M. Martin

Joseph M. Martin

Joseph M. Martin studied piano performance at Furman University and earned his master's degree from the University of Texas, Austin, where he later taught in the Piano Pedagogy Department for five years. A accomplished solo pianist, he has performed recitals across the United States and Mexico, including a performance with the Guadalajara Symphony Orchestra following his win in the Nina Plant Wideman Competition. His work has been heard in prestigious venues from Carnegie Hall to regional theaters, but in recent years Martin has focused much of his creative energy on church music and compositions for worship settings.

Based in Austin, Texas, Martin continues to compose and arrange with remarkable range and inventiveness. His music appears regularly in worship services throughout the United States and Canada, and he remains active in both performance and service to the church music community. His background as a trained pianist deeply informs his choral writing, which consistently demonstrates harmonic sophistication and practical singability.

Why we love this

Martin pairs a contemporary spiritual affirmation with a beloved African American hymn tune in a way that feels organic rather than forced. The 2-part voicing keeps the focus on the text and melody without sacrificing harmonic interest, making it accessible for mixed-ability choirs while still rewarding careful musical attention. Programs built around faith and hope find a genuine anchor here.

What to expect

There is quiet confidence in this piece. The opening contemporary text builds in assertion before meeting the grounded assurance of the familiar hymn tune, creating a conversation between hope and tradition. Singing it leaves the choir and audience with a sense of personal conviction paired with communal strength.

Who it's for

This arrangement serves small to mid-sized choirs looking for a 2-part setting that works for diverse skill levels without condescending to anyone. Directors programming worship services, youth choir concerts, or community sings will find it immediately singable and deeply meaningful.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the melody line with intentional breath points that align with phrase endings rather than musical barlines; this keeps the text from feeling rushed and highlights the message.
  • Balance the spiritual text with the familiar hymn tune by treating each section with equal care. Neither overshadows the other when both are sung with conviction.
  • Emphasize the textural shift when the two sections meet. A slight tempo adjustment or dynamic reset can help audiences hear the connection as a moment of clarity rather than a simple splice.

How to use it

Open a concert with this setting to establish a spiritual or introspective mood before moving into other repertoire, or close with it as a moment of shared affirmation with your audience. It also works beautifully in worship contexts where both the contemporary and traditional elements will resonate with congregational listeners.

Skills your students will build
