About the Arranger: Joseph M. Martin

Joseph M. Martin

Joseph M. Martin trained as a pianist at Furman University and earned his master's degree in piano performance from the University of Texas at Austin, where he later taught in the Piano Pedagogy Department. His performance career has taken him across North America and Mexico, including a featured appearance with the Guadalajara Symphony Orchestra as the winner of the Nina Plant Wideman Competition, and a nationally broadcast recital from Ex-convento del Carman.

Today, Martin divides his time between concert performance and composing and arranging music for worship settings. His works appear in venues ranging from Carnegie Hall to small churches across the United States and Canada, reflecting his deep commitment to sacred music. He makes his home in Austin, Texas with his family.

Why we love this

Martin's arrangement brings warmth and accessibility to sacred hymn material without sacrificing musical substance. The 14-page score provides enough harmonic interest and textural variety to engage both singers and listeners, making it suitable for anthems where congregational familiarity pairs well with choral artistry.

What to expect

These arrangements embody the quiet confidence of well-loved hymn texts given fresh voice. The writing honors tradition while offering enough harmonic color and part independence to feel contemporary rather than antiquated.

Who it's for

This collection works well for church choirs of all levels seeking reliable, singable sacred repertoire. It's equally at home in community choirs with strong hymn traditions and advanced ensembles looking for accessible program filler that commands respect.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the vocal lines so that text clarity remains the priority, particularly in the lower voices where hymn harmonies can cloud the message if not carefully shaped.
  • Allow the organ or piano accompaniment to breathe between phrases rather than driving relentlessly forward; hymn texts need room for reflection.
  • Shape dynamics around the emotional arc of each hymn text rather than treating all verses identically; repetition works best when subtle variation sustains engagement.

How to use it

Integrate individual hymn arrangements into services or concerts that celebrate faith and community. Martin's straightforward, musical approach makes these ideal for mixed-repertoire programs where you want grounded, heartfelt content between more elaborate works.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing with appropriate reverence and text clarity in sustained, hymn-like passages
  • Balancing independent vocal lines while maintaining harmonic blend
  • Responding to English language text accentuation and phrasing in sacred music
  • Part independence and confidence singing non-unison material
