About the Composer: Joel Raney

Joel Raney

Joel Raney's musical foundation was laid at the piano before formal education began, shaped profoundly by the gospel traditions of rural Alabama churches. He pursued formal training at the University of North Alabama in choral conducting and later earned his master's degree in piano performance from The Juilliard School, credentials that inform both his compositional voice and his work as Editor at Hope Publishing.

Since 1999, Raney has become one of church music's most prolific and commercially successful composers, with over 300 published titles spanning anthems, musicals, cantatas, handbell works, and instrumental compositions. Beyond the church music world, his experience encompasses classical and jazz performance, theatrical conducting for national Broadway tours, and extensive work as a composer and producer for television, radio, and film. He remains an active clinician and performer, maintaining his role as Minister of Music while touring as a piano soloist and duo partner with fellow organist Jane Holstein.

Why we love this

Raney brings his trademark warmth and accessibility to this Christmas text without sacrificing musical substance. The piece balances reverent simplicity with the harmonic sophistication and emotional depth his church music audiences have come to expect, making it equally at home in a concert setting or worship service.

What to expect

The piece unfolds with quiet contemplation, inviting listeners into a moment of hushed reverence. Raney's harmonies glow rather than blaze, creating an atmosphere of intimate reflection perfectly suited to the Christmas season's quieter spiritual dimensions.

Who it's for

Choirs of intermediate to advanced capabilities seeking a Christmas work that avoids sentimentality while remaining deeply accessible. This works equally well for church choirs, community ensembles, and school programs looking for repertoire with substance and warmth.

How to get the most out of it

  • Allow the text to breathe. "How Quietly" invites intimacy; resist the urge to rush, letting the stillness of the narrative carry its own weight.
  • Shape phrases around the natural speech patterns of the words rather than mechanical bar lines. This makes the meaning clearer and the performance more moving.
  • Balance your section blend carefully in the outer voices. Raney's voicing works best when altos and tenors aren't buried, even as sopranos and basses anchor the harmonic structure.
  • Explore the recorded accompaniment as a learning tool first. Once your choir knows the piece, consider pulling it back to let voices establish their own air and resonance.

How to use it

Use this as a centerpiece for a reflective Christmas concert set, perhaps paired with a joyful, energetic opener and a more elaborate closing work. Its eight pages and moderate difficulty make it viable for holiday services, school December concerts, or ecumenical community performances.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing with stylistic restraint and dynamic control in a sacred context
  • Interpreting text with musical sensitivity rather than literal illustration
  • Balancing part independence in four-part writing where all voices carry equal melodic weight
  • Sustaining vocal line coherence across extended phrases without musical props
  • Blending across a full SATB range while maintaining individual voice clarity
