About the Composer: Joel Raney

Joel Raney

Joel Raney began his musical life at the piano before he could read, shaped profoundly by the gospel tradition of rural Alabama churches. He earned his bachelor's degree in choral conducting from the University of North Alabama and later completed a master's degree in piano performance at The Juilliard School, giving him command of both the conductor's podium and the keyboard.

Since 1999, Raney has become a defining voice in church music, with over 300 published works across choral anthems, musicals, cantatas, handbell compositions, and solo piano works. His versatility spans classical and jazz performance to commercial music production (including soundtracks for more than 2000 television and radio spots), and he remains active as a clinician, recitalist, and current Minister of Music at First Baptist Church of Oak Park, Illinois.

Why we love this

Raney's gift for writing accessible yet emotionally sophisticated sacred music shines here. The gentle texture of a 2-part setting lets the intimacy of the text breathe while remaining choir-friendly, making this an excellent choice for mixed-ability ensembles or those preparing a meaningful Christmas service moment without technical demands.

What to expect

Gentle and introspective, inviting the listener into a moment of stillness. The simplicity of the setting amplifies the power of the text, creating an intimate quality that asks singers and listeners alike to slow down and listen closely.

Who it's for

Any choir seeking a tender, uncomplicated Christmas selection that works for services, informal performances, or devotional moments. The 2-part voicing makes it suitable for elementary and middle school choirs as well as volunteer church ensembles with limited rehearsal time.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the phrase contours deliberately rather than singing on a single dynamic level; the quietness of the piece invites subtle dynamic gradations that deepen the meditative quality.
  • Balance the two parts so neither dominates; this is collaborative singing, and the independence of each line will emerge most clearly when both voice groups commit equally to their material.
  • Consider the text's pacing and allow slight breathing room between phrases to let the reflective character settle with your singers and audience.

How to use it

Use this as a quiet moment of reflection within a larger Christmas concert program, perhaps following more energetic selections. Its modest length (8 pages) and straightforward voicing also make it ideal for church services where you need something meaningful but not demanding in preparation.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing sustained tones with control and breath awareness
  • Balancing two independent melodic lines without blend collapsing
  • Interpreting text through dynamic subtlety and phrasing
  • Maintaining musical independence while listening to an ensemble
