About the Arranger: Patti Drennan

Patti Drennan

Patti Drennan's career as a choral director shaped her approach to composition and arrangement. She spent 28 years teaching in Norman Public Schools, where her choirs earned consistent superior ratings and where she received Teacher of the Year honors. Her work earned recognition from the Oklahoma Choral Directors Association, which awarded her the Director of Distinction Award in 2004.

Since retiring from classroom teaching, Drennan has focused entirely on composing and arranging. With over 425 published choral octavos and more than two million copies in circulation, she has become a prolific voice in church and school music. She continues to lead workshops and composer weekends across the United States and Canada, and she collaborates musically with her daughter Emily, a performer based in New York City.

Why we love this

Drennan writes with a keen understanding of what unison choirs need: music that sits comfortably in the voice, conveys genuine emotion without requiring harmonic complexity, and works in multiple performance settings. At just two pages, this arrangement respects your rehearsal schedule while delivering a piece that sounds complete and polished.

What to expect

This arrangement carries the celebratory, affirmative spirit of its text. A unison texture creates intimacy and collective voice, allowing singers to focus on genuine expression rather than managing multiple harmonic layers. The brevity and accessibility mean the emotional impact lands quickly.

Who it's for

Any choir seeking a unison sacred piece that works for worship settings, church services, or concert programming. This works especially well for developing choirs, younger singers, or any ensemble wanting to perform a substantial sacred work without the demands of divisi writing.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance clarity of text with musical line. The unison texture means every word lands; shape phrases through dynamic support rather than harmonic color.
  • Let the rhythmic drive of the piece emerge without rushing. Drennan's arrangements typically benefit from a steady, confident pulse that carries the message.
  • Consider how the piece sits in your choir's range. Unison writing demands particular attention to where the melody sits for your specific ensemble; adjust keys if needed to ensure comfort and projection.

How to use it

Include this in a sacred music set during an Easter or Palm Sunday service, or use it as an accessible entry point in a mixed concert that features more complex arrangements elsewhere. Its two-page length makes it ideal for filling a specific moment in your program without displacing other repertoire.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing with unified vowel production across a unison line
  • Clarity of diction in sacred text
  • Phrase shaping and dynamic control without harmonic support
  • Projection and presence in a single melodic line
