More about this title

About the Composer: Bert Ligon

Bert Ligon

Bert Ligon directs the jazz studies program at the University of South Carolina, where he oversees jazz combos and big bands while teaching theory, improvisation, arranging, and applied lessons. His compositional range spans big band, orchestra, jazz combo, steel band, and jazz strings, and he has authored three significant texts: Connecting Chords with Linear Harmony, Comprehensive Technique for the Jazz Musician, and Jazz Theory Resources Vol. 1 & 2.

Ligon's work as a performer extends his teaching philosophy into practice. His 2006 trio recording features him on piano alongside violinist Martin Norgaard and cellist Renata Bratt, demonstrating the collaborative interplay he values in ensemble settings. A pianist and guitarist himself, Ligon brings practical performance experience to every arrangement and composition he creates.

Why we love this

Ligon's jazz background brings sophistication to this trio without demanding virtuosity. The Grade 3.5 level keeps the work accessible while the harmonic language and voicings give players something genuinely musical to sink their teeth into, making rehearsals engaging rather than mechanical.

What to expect

The piece carries the warmth of a seasonal theme without sentimentality, blending the melodic directness of a holiday tune with the harmonic openness jazz naturally brings. There's an inviting quality to it, like a well-played standard you actually want to hear again.

Who it's for

Piano trios working at the intermediate level who want to explore jazz-influenced material without abandoning traditional trio instrumentation. This is equally valuable for advanced ensembles seeking fresh contemporary programming or for students who want their chamber music experience to include the language and feel of jazz.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish a steady, relaxed tempo before adding interpretive details; the jazz idiom depends on rhythmic security from all three players working together.
  • Balance the melodic line between violin and cello so neither drowns out the other, letting the piano anchor the harmonic foundation without overpowering.
  • Approach phrasing as conversation rather than strict time; listen for where colleagues breathe and shape phrases to respond naturally to their musical choices.
  • Pay close attention to any syncopated figures in the score; jazz-influenced writing often places emphasis off the beat, and ensemble clarity depends on locking those moments together.

How to use it

Schedule this as a chamber music offering on a holiday concert or winter recital, placing it alongside traditional trio repertoire to showcase stylistic breadth. It also works beautifully as a set piece for chamber music festivals or competitions where trios want to demonstrate comfort beyond the classical canon.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and executing jazz harmonies and voicings on acoustic instruments
  • Responding to rhythmic flexibility within a jazz context while maintaining ensemble cohesion
  • Balancing melody and accompaniment roles in a three-voice texture
  • Interpreting contemporary composed jazz arrangements for strings and keyboard
