About the Arranger: Joel Raney

Joel Raney

Joel Raney's musical foundation was laid in a rural Alabama Baptist church, where gospel music became the cornerstone of his compositional voice. That early immersion in sacred music never left him; it surfaces throughout his prolific catalog of over 300 published works. After earning his bachelor's in choral conducting from the University of North Alabama, he pursued advanced keyboard training at Juilliard, developing the technical sophistication that distinguishes his arrangements.

Since 1999, Raney has become a commanding presence in church music publishing, serving as Editor at Hope Publishing while his own works consistently top sales lists. His output spans choral anthems, musicals, cantatas, handbell compositions, and instrumental works, informed by a career that includes Broadway conducting, commercial scoring for thousands of television and radio spots, and ongoing performance as a piano soloist and clinician. Currently Minister of Music at First Baptist Church of Oak Park, Illinois, he continues to balance his publishing work with active conducting and performing throughout North America.

Why we love this

Raney brings authentic gospel sensibility to this beloved hymn, honoring its spiritual roots while crafting an arrangement that feels fresh and singable for contemporary choirs. The instrumental pak format gives you flexibility to program with or without accompaniment, and the energy he builds here translates across different worship contexts, from Sunday morning services to special concert presentations.

What to expect

Holy Manna carries the quiet confidence of a hymn with deep roots, yet Raney's arrangement brings warmth and subtle rhythmic life that prevents it from feeling stiff or antiquated. There's a sense of communal singing here, the kind where individual voices blend into something larger and more meaningful than the sum of their parts.

Who it's for

Church music directors and choirs seeking a fresh but respectful treatment of a standard hymn; singers at all levels, from community ensembles to more experienced groups. This works equally well for Sunday services, special music offerings, or educational settings where musicians need a solidly crafted arrangement with gospel influence.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the choral texture by setting the dynamic based on the hymn's harmonic movement rather than marking every phrase at the same level; let the harmony guide your intensity
  • Establish the groove early with your rhythm section so singers can settle into a confident, unhurried tempo that honors the hymn's steadiness
  • Shape phrase endings with slight breath releases rather than complete cutoffs; this maintains the spiritual flow characteristic of hymn singing

How to use it

Pair this with other sacred pieces to create a thematic concert exploring American hymn traditions, or position it as a unifying moment in a varied program where its familiar melody offers listeners an anchor point. It also serves beautifully as a processional or benediction, providing both musical substance and spiritual weight.

Skills your students will build
