About the Arranger: Victor Labenske

Victor Labenske

Victor Labenske has taught piano and composition at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, where he also earned his undergraduate degree summa cum laude. He holds a Master of Music in piano performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music, studying with Joanne Baker, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in piano performance from the University of Southern California under Stewart Gordon.

Labenske has built a prolific career as both performer and composer, with over 700 published works across various difficulty levels. His achievements include performing in the opening ceremonies of the 1984 Olympic Games and being named an Academic All-American Scholar. He remains active as a concert artist, presenting keyboard workshops and performing sacred music alongside his wife, Judith Spaite Labenske. His sacred collections for Alfred Music include the Sunday Morning Companion library and Play Praise, a graded series of contemporary worship arrangements for student pianists.

Why we love this

These three pieces function beautifully as independent selections or as a cohesive suite, giving you genuine flexibility in worship programming. Labenske's arrangements balance expressive depth with intermediate accessibility, so pianists feel the spiritual weight of the music without struggling through the mechanics.

What to expect

The music draws its roots from familiar spiritual territory but approaches each theme with lyrical warmth and harmonic richness. These arrangements invite quiet reflection and pastoral sincerity, creating the kind of musical prayer that settles into the room.

Who it's for

This suite speaks to intermediate pianists in church settings who want arrangements that honor hymnic tradition while offering musical substance. Whether you play prelude services, lead congregational worship, or prepare recital repertoire for a faith-based context, these pieces reward both the player and the listener.

How to get the most out of it

  • Let the harmonic progressions breathe between phrases; resist rushing through chord changes that carry the emotional arc of each piece.
  • Study the Scripture correlations provided for each movement. Understanding the spiritual context enriches interpretive choices about tempo and dynamics.
  • Shape the prelude, offertory, and postlude as distinct liturgical moments rather than three unrelated pieces. Each has a specific role in worship flow.
  • Balance the printed tempo markings with the acoustics of your worship space; a reverberant sanctuary may call for slightly more deliberate pacing than studio practice suggests.

How to use it

Slot the three pieces into a Sunday worship service as prelude, offertory, and postlude, using the suggested performance times to fit your service flow exactly. Alternatively, present all three consecutively during a special concert or sacred music recital to create a unified spiritual statement around themes of divine love, transformation, and the Holy Spirit's presence.

Skills your students will build

  • Hymn-style harmonic progressions and voice leading
  • Expressive rubato and interpretive control in religious music
  • Navigating moderate key changes and modulations
  • Balancing melodic singing tone with supporting accompaniment figures
  • Performing with appropriate tempo flexibility for liturgical contexts
