About the Arranger: Greg Gilpin

Greg Gilpin

Greg Gilpin has established himself as a prolific choral arranger and composer whose work appears regularly in American concert halls and educational settings. His arrangements span sacred and secular repertoire, and he has conducted performances at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Ryman Auditorium, Sydney Opera House, Royal Festival Hall, and venues across the globe. As Director of Educational Choral Publications for Shawnee Press, Gilpin shapes choral literature for school and community ensembles.

Beyond composition, Gilpin holds ASCAP awards for his creative work and maintains active roles in ACDA, NAfME, and SAG-AFTRA. His 2021 score for the short film "Rosie's Rescue" earned Best Score recognition. A Life Loyal Member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Gilpin continues to balance his work as a composer, conductor, and educator with ventures into professional organizing and media appearances.

Why we love this

Gilpin's arrangements for beginning choirs strike the right balance between accessibility and genuine musicality. Six different songs within one kit mean you can build a complete concert set without hunting for multiple purchases, and the easy grade level makes these approachable for groups still developing blend and intonation. The seasonal spread from late winter through spring keeps this kit relevant across the latter half of your school year.

What to expect

These arrangements radiate warmth and straightforwardness. Familiar melodies sit comfortably in young voices while the harmonies underneath feel supportive rather than challenging. There's a celebratory quality throughout, whether the song marks a holiday, a friendship milestone, or a transition toward summer.

Who it's for

Elementary and middle school choir directors managing groups at the beginning of their two-part singing journey. This kit works equally well for community choirs, church children's choirs, and arts integration programs seeking seasonal material that doesn't demand advanced vocal technique.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the two parts carefully during rehearsals; ask singers to listen across the room rather than focusing only on their own line. This habit early on builds ensemble awareness.
  • Use the director's accompaniment scores to establish clear tempos and harmonic anchors before drilling parts independently.
  • Identify any unison sections or moments where parts converge, and rehearse those passages first to build confidence before tackling divisi sections.
  • Keep diction clean and uniform across both parts, especially on text-heavy moments like "Free at Last" and "It's President's Day!"

How to use it

Slot individual songs into winter and spring concerts, or perform the entire kit as a thematic set. The mix of patriotic, cultural, and friendship-themed pieces gives you flexibility to weave them throughout a year's calendar of performances.

Skills your students will build

  • Part independence in two-part harmony
  • Sustaining longer melodic phrases with breath control
  • Reading and singing secular texts with clear diction
  • Responding to conductor cueing across divisi sections
  • Blending voices across a choir section
