About the Arranger: Mark Williams

Mark Williams

Mark Williams built a career writing for young musicians across multiple ensembles and skill levels. His catalog of more than 200 published compositions for band, orchestra, and choir reflects decades spent in school music classrooms, particularly elementary settings in Washington state. Williams earned degrees in music education from Eastern Washington University and supplemented his teaching with active performance on bassoon and service as conductor and artistic director for the Spokane British Brass Band.

Beyond the classroom, Williams established himself as a clinician and guest conductor, traveling throughout North America and Australia to work with student ensembles. He co-authored the Accent on Achievement Band Method and received recognition from ASCAP and the Western International Band Clinic's Gralia Competition. His work with the 560th Air Force Band as woodwind performer and arranger further shaped his understanding of what young orchestras and bands could accomplish.

Why we love this

Williams writes novelty arrangements that genuinely work in elementary string programs. Holiday Hoedown captures the energy and spirit young players need to feel successful while maintaining the musical integrity directors expect. At Grade 1, it's playable without sacrificing charm or humor.

What to expect

A good-natured romp through holiday territory. The arrangement bounces with character and invites the ensemble into the fun without condescension. It's the kind of piece that makes young players smile while they're playing it.

Who it's for

String orchestra directors at the elementary and early middle school level who need a fun, musically honest holiday selection. This works for programs seeking material that entertains an audience while keeping players engaged and feeling like musicians, not novelty performers.

How to get the most out of it

  • Keep the tempo light and buoyant; resist the urge to drag the novelty sections even when they feel silly.
  • Balance the divisi passages carefully so no single voice overwhelms. Younger orchestras often push toward doubling the melody unintentionally.
  • Mark the rhythmic hits clearly in rehearsal. Novelty writing depends on precision in the ensemble's rhythmic punctuation.
  • Let the pizzicato and articulated passages breathe. They're more effective when they feel intentional, not rushed.

How to use it

Pair this with a more substantial holiday work on a December concert to maintain musical balance while serving the festive programming expectation. The shorter length (1:32) makes it ideal as a concert opener or closer that refreshes the audience and orchestra alike.

Skills your students will build

  • Playing with articulation and clarity in novelty style contexts
  • Managing pizzicato and arco transitions smoothly
  • Responding to rhythmic precision and ensemble synchronization in comedic phrasing
  • Building confidence in Grade 1 ensemble playing through accessible, rewarding repertoire
