About the Arranger: Ralph Ford

Ralph Ford

Ralph Ford brings three decades of professional arranging experience to every score he writes. Starting at age fifteen in Panama City, Florida, he has worked across university, military, professional, and school ensembles worldwide, earning commissions and international recognition for his compositional work in both music and media.

Ford served fifteen years on the faculty at Troy State University, where he taught orchestration, arranging, theory, and jazz studies while serving as staff arranger for the university band program. He has since become an exclusive composer and arranger for the Belwin division of Alfred Music, with over 250 published titles spanning orchestra, concert band, jazz ensemble, and marching band.

Why we love this

These arrangements live in the sweet spot between current repertoire and concert logistics. Ford's charts deliver immediate crowd energy without demanding excessive rehearsal time from your ensemble, which means you can program high-impact stadium moments even during a packed season.

What to expect

Contemporary, rhythmically driven, and designed for stadium impact. These arrangements capture the infectious momentum of hip-hop while maintaining the precision and clarity that marching band audiences expect.

Who it's for

Marching bands seeking repertoire that connects with today's audiences and maximizes fan engagement during football season. Directors managing tight rehearsal schedules will appreciate arrangements that sound energetic and polished without requiring extensive preparation time.

How to get the most out of it

  • Emphasize rhythmic precision in the hip-hop grooves; the pocket is everything. Have your rhythm section nail the backbone first, then layer in the melodic voices once they lock in together.
  • Balance the contemporary feel with clean articulation. These tracks thrive when every section attacks with intention rather than sliding into the groove.
  • Use the three-arrangement format to build energy across your timeout sequence. Start with the most recognizable tune, then shift to build momentum toward your finale.

How to use it

Program all three arrangements as a unified timeout entertainment block during football games. This creates a cohesive halftime or entertainment moment that plays directly to your crowd's current musical tastes while showcasing your ensemble's versatility.

Skills your students will build

  • Executing syncopated rhythmic figures in hip-hop styles
  • Maintaining ensemble cohesion in groove-based music
  • Balancing contemporary articulation with concert music precision
  • Reading and performing extended percussion parts
