About the Artist: Randall Hartsell

Randall Hartsell

Randall Hartsell's compositions have shaped the musical development of countless students since he first began writing for young pianists in high school. Drawing inspiration from literature, choir arrangements, and radio broadcasts, he developed a gift for capturing what moves learners at every stage. After earning his degree from East Carolina University, Hartsell returned to teaching and composing in earnest, eventually publishing over 60 collections and solos since his landmark three-book series "Something Special" appeared in 1990.

A North Carolina native, Hartsell learned piano through dedicated practice at his aunt and uncle's home before his family could afford their own instrument. That persistence shaped his understanding of what it takes to build a musician from the ground up. Today, he remains active as a teacher, accompanist, clinician, and church musician in Charlotte, bringing the same lyrical sensibility to his writing that first drew him to the instrument as a young student.

Why we love this

Hartsell knows exactly how to sustain a Grade 2 student's interest through genuine musical substance. This etude pairs technical clarity with harmonic warmth, giving students something meaningful to work toward rather than merely drilling mechanics.

What to expect

Stately and purposeful, with an undercurrent of warmth that keeps the heroic character from feeling cold or austere. The piece invites the student to stand a little taller at the keyboard while remaining entirely playable.

Who it's for

Grade 2 pianists ready to move beyond pure technique exercises into pieces with genuine character and musical arc. Students who respond to lyrical writing and need scaffolded challenges that build confidence alongside skill.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the melodic line through careful dynamic control; even at this level, students respond well to the instruction to play musically rather than metronomically.
  • Work passages hands separately until the technical challenge becomes transparent, then listen for how the hands support each other's phrasing.
  • Establish a steady practice tempo and resist the impulse to rush; the piece's heroic quality emerges from confidence and command, not speed.

How to use it

A natural choice for studio recitals, piano festivals, or as a milestone piece marking the transition from early intermediate to solid Grade 2 repertoire. Hartsell's lyrical voice also pairs well with group recital contexts where you want student soloists to sound polished and purposeful.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustaining a melodic line across phrase boundaries
  • Dynamic shaping at moderate tempos
  • Right hand independence and control in the upper register
  • Balance between accompaniment and melody
