About the Arranger: Kirby Shaw

Kirby Shaw brings decades of choral expertise earned through teaching in public schools and directing acclaimed vocal jazz ensembles at College of the Siskiyous, Colorado State University, and the University of Missouri at Kansas City. His formal training spans Music Education and Choral Composition from San Jose State University, plus a DMA in Choral Conducting from the University of Washington. He has worked extensively with jazz vocalists including Bobby McFerrin, Mark Murphy, and Al Jarreau, and his creative output of over 2500 arrangements has generated nearly 20 million copies sold worldwide.
Shaw's influence extends across 45 states and internationally to Canada, Australia, Sweden, The Netherlands, Italy, Spain, and Germany. His teaching combines rigorous musicianship with humor and infectious energy, a philosophy evident in his arrangements and compositions. Recent commissions include work for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and he continues to direct the Jefferson State Choral Coalition at Southern Oregon University while collaborating with his wife Markita on theatrical projects.
Why we love this
Shaw's arrangement captures the effervescent charm of this timeless melody while keeping the rhythmic voicing accessible and fun. The phrasing feels natural for young singers, never forcing the text or overshadowing the tune that audiences recognize instantly. This is the kind of arrangement that reminds singers why they love performing in the first place.
What to expect
Bright, buoyant, and immediately recognizable. The melody carries a nostalgic warmth that feels both vintage and timeless, inviting singers to perform with genuine joy rather than manufactured energy. There's a lightness here, a sense of celebration without pretension.
Who it's for
This arrangement works beautifully for children's choirs, middle school groups, and programs seeking an accessible pop standard that connects with family audiences. The rhythmic voicing keeps technical demands manageable while preserving the song's infectious character.
How to get the most out of it
- Keep the tempo buoyant and light; the joy of this song lives in its rhythmic lift, not in pushing for depth
- Balance the vocal lines with the instrumental parts so the ensemble feels like one unified sound rather than voices competing with accompaniment
- Shape the phrase endings with a gentle taper rather than a hard cutoff; let the melody breathe naturally
How to use it
Slot this into a spring or pop music concert where you want an immediate emotional connection with your audience. Pair it with other standards or contemporary pop selections to create a program with broad appeal. It also works as a concert opener that sets an upbeat, welcoming tone.
Skills your students will build
- Phrasing and shaping sustained melodic lines
- Rhythmic independence in vocal sections against instrumental accompaniment
