About the Arranger: Lon Beery

Lon Beery

Lon Beery directs six choruses at Spry Middle School in Webster, New York, where he works with approximately 500 students across multiple ensembles. His published works appear in the catalogs of Alfred Music, BriLee, and other major publishers, and his compositions have been performed by prestigious groups including the U.S. Army Chorus at significant national events.

Beery has received multiple ASCAP Standard Awards for his compositions and actively contributes to the choral music education field through articles in the Choral Journal and Music Educators Journal. He serves as Middle School Chair for New York ACDA and has presented sessions at state, regional, and national conferences.

Why we love this

Beery's arrangement opens this beloved folk standard to mixed treble and lower voicings, making it accessible for choirs at different voice development stages. The flexibility of the voicing options (TB through TTBB) means you can perform the same arrangement with your most appropriate combination, building repertoire depth without needing multiple editions.

What to expect

Hava Nagila radiates communal celebration and infectious joy. The familiar melody carries generations of cultural tradition, while Beery's straightforward arrangement lets the text and tune shine without unnecessary complexity, creating music that feels both genuine and inviting.

Who it's for

Middle school, high school, and community choirs seeking flexible voicing options for a repertoire staple. This arrangement works equally well for concert programs, festival competitions, or Chanukah celebrations where you need joyful, accessible material that spans multiple voice combinations.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lean into the rhythmic drive that makes this tune infectious. The forward momentum comes from crisp attacks and released consonants, not from rushing the tempo.
  • Balance the melodic voices against any supporting harmonic parts so the familiar tune stays front and center. Listeners should sing along instantly.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment in rehearsal to establish the stylistic feel and meter, then gradually transition to live piano so students internalize the groove themselves.

How to use it

Program this as an uplifting encore or festival piece that connects with diverse audiences. It works especially well in concert series celebrating cultural traditions or as part of a Chanukah festival; its accessibility also makes it ideal for demonstration or collaborative programs involving younger and older choirs.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing in multiple voicing configurations (TB/TTB/TBB/TTBB)
  • Maintaining rhythmic integrity in a traditional folk style
  • Balancing melody and harmony within a compact arrangement
  • Learning and performing music rooted in cultural and religious traditions
