About the Arranger: Joseph M. Martin

Joseph M. Martin

Joseph M. Martin studied piano performance at Furman University and earned his master's degree from the University of Texas at Austin, where he later taught in the Piano Pedagogy Department for five years. A accomplished solo recitalist and symphony soloist, he won the Nina Plant Wideman Competition and has performed across the United States and Mexico, including at Carnegie Hall and major venues in Branson, Missouri.

Over the course of his career, Martin has shifted his focus toward sacred music and church musician conferences, composing and arranging extensively for worship contexts. His catalog spans an impressive range of styles and approaches, performed regularly in hundreds of churches throughout the United States and Canada. He currently resides in Austin, Texas.

Why we love this

Martin's treatment transforms this beloved carol into something genuinely fresh without losing what makes it sacred and singable. The addition of congregational participation in the finale creates a natural gathering moment that feels earned rather than tacked on, making this an unusually effective closer for a holiday service that actually brings people together musically.

What to expect

Luminous and celebratory, yet rooted in the quiet majesty of the original melody. Martin's arrangement builds from intimate moments to full, shimmering harmonies, creating a sense of gathering warmth that peaks when voices from the pews join the choir.

Who it's for

Choirs looking for a standout carol that goes beyond the standard Christmas Eve repertoire, with enough musical substance to engage singers while remaining accessible to congregations. Works equally well for churches with full orchestral support or those using the StudioTrax accompaniment.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the choir's dazzling writing against the orchestration so the text remains clear through the arrangement's busier moments.
  • Rehearse the congregational finale separately first; cue the congregation explicitly and consider a brief instrumental introduction to establish the melody and tempo.
  • Let the orchestra drive the energy in the inner sections while keeping the choir's tone warm and connected to the carol's devotional roots.

How to use it

Position this as your final carol on a Christmas service or cantata performance, especially if your congregation is present. The built-in congregational moment gives everyone a stake in the conclusion, making it far more effective than a choir-only finale would be.

Skills your students will build

  • Balancing multiple harmonic layers within a single arrangement
  • Phrasing across longer melodic arcs while maintaining text clarity
  • Ensemble listening in contexts with full orchestration
  • Preparing and supporting congregational participation in rehearsal
