About the Artist: Kirby Shaw

Kirby Shaw

Kirby Shaw's influence on choral music education spans continents. With formal training in Music Education, Choral Composition, and Choral Conducting (DMA from University of Washington), he has brought his teaching to 45 states and numerous countries across Europe, Australia, and the Caribbean. His career includes founding the acclaimed COS Vocal Jazz Ensemble and directing similar programs at Colorado State University and the University of Missouri at Kansas City.

A prolific composer and arranger with over 2,500 published works, Shaw's arrangements have sold nearly 20 million copies worldwide and earned multiple ASCAP awards. His work extends beyond the page: he has mentored under vocal legends including Bobby McFerrin, Al Jarreau, and Jon Hendricks, and currently directs the Jefferson State Choral Coalition at Southern Oregon University. Beyond choral music, Shaw co-authored an original musical adaptation of A Christmas Carol with his wife, Markita.

Why we love this

Shaw understands what makes a carol sing rather than plod. The rhythmic energy here comes from genuine swing and forward motion in the accompaniment, not forced enthusiasm. Your rhythm section players will have actual musicality to explore, and your singers will feel supported and propelled rather than dragged along.

What to expect

Joyful without being saccharine. The arrangement bounces with life while respecting the carol's harmonic foundation. Two minutes forty-five seconds of genuine celebration, shaped by a composer who knows how to make rhythm itself musical.

Who it's for

Choirs working with rhythm section musicians (guitar, bass, drums) who want a Christmas number with genuine musical substance, not generic holiday filler. This works for intermediate and advanced high school choirs, college groups, and community ensembles where instrumental players are part of the ensemble.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish a clear pocket with your drums and bass before rehearsing the full choir. The groove underneath carries the joyfulness Shaw composed into this arrangement.
  • Balance the vocal line so it rides above the instrumental parts without the rhythmic accompaniment disappearing into accompaniment texture. Both elements deserve presence.
  • Keep the tempo steady through the final section. The rousing finish Shaw mentions works only if the ensemble trusts the groove and doesn't rush the excitement.

How to use it

Program this as the closer on a Christmas concert when you want to send the audience out energized and satisfied. It pairs well on a set list with slower, more reverent carols, giving you dynamic contrast that keeps the program moving. The relatively compact length makes it ideal for a concert where multiple choirs are performing.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing with rhythmic precision and forward momentum in a contemporary choral setting
  • Ensemble coordination with active rhythm section accompaniment
  • Balancing vocal production in ensemble textures that blend harmonic and rhythmic elements
