About the Arranger: Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock earned degrees in music education at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels, bringing deep pedagogical training to his work as a composer and arranger. His performance background spans trumpet study with prominent teachers and extensive work with ensembles ranging from the Miami Philharmonic Orchestra to regional and national touring bands.

Bullock has contributed over 600 published compositions and arrangements across concert band, orchestra, jazz ensemble, and marching band repertoire. He taught instrumental music in classroom settings for two decades, including seven years as an assistant band director at Ithaca College's School of Music, where he also chaired the Music Education Department. His collaborative efforts include co-authoring the Belwin 21st Century Band Method and contributing arrangements for Music Expressions, an innovative school music curriculum. He has conducted clinics and workshops throughout the United States, Canada, and England, and maintains membership in ASCAP since 1980.

Why we love this

Bullock designed this collection to work for your schedule, not against it. Whether you need a polished quintet for a pre-concert reception or want full band involvement during the main concert, the flexible scoring lets you build the arrangement around your rehearsal time and personnel constraints. The Grade 2.5 scoring balances accessibility with genuine musicality, so your students hear real four-part voicing without getting bogged down in technical difficulty.

What to expect

Familiar carol melodies emerge with fresh harmonic support and tasteful orchestration. The Grade 2.5 accessibility keeps the focus on musical expression rather than technical hurdles, allowing young musicians to concentrate on phrasing, balance, and capturing the seasonal warmth of these beloved tunes.

Who it's for

This collection serves middle school and high school bands seeking Christmas programming that adapts to real-world rehearsal constraints. Directors working with limited ensemble size, split scheduling, or performance spaces that accommodate pre-concert entertainment will find the flexible format especially practical.

How to get the most out of it

  • Prepare the piece in its intended smaller grouping first. A brass or woodwind quintet rehearses efficiently and builds confidence before expanding to full band, giving students early success and reducing overall sectional time.
  • Balance the familiar melodies against the harmonic colors in Bullock's setting. These carols work best when the tune remains clear but supported by rich accompaniment voices, so listen across the ensemble in rehearsal rather than simply doubling the melody.
  • Plan your transition carefully if you perform the same piece in both formats (quintet before or after the concert, full band during). Ensure all players, regardless of ensemble size, understand the same interpretation of tempo and phrasing.

How to use it

Schedule the full band arrangement as a concert highlight when you want accessible repertoire that includes everyone. Alternatively, feature a brass or woodwind quintet in the lobby before the concert begins or during an intermission reception, creating an inviting atmosphere while your full ensemble prepares for the main program. The 6 minute 45 second duration fits comfortably into either context.

Skills your students will build

  • Balancing melody and accompaniment voices
  • Performing in flexible ensemble configurations (full band, brass quintet, woodwind quintet)
  • Phrasing familiar melodies in fresh harmonic settings
  • Reading concert band scores and parts at Grade 2.5 level
  • Adapting interpretation between small and large ensemble contexts
