About the Arranger: Mary Donnelly

Mary Donnelly

Mary Donnelly's thirty-year teaching career in Nevada's Washoe County schools shaped her approach to choral writing for younger singers. She holds a Master's Degree in Education from Lesley College, where her coursework centered on integrating the arts across disciplines, and earned her Bachelor's from the University of Nevada, Reno. Active in ACDA, NEA, and ASCAP, she has authored over two hundred songs and twenty-five musicals alongside her longtime collaborator George Strid.

Donnelly and Strid's partnership began in 1985 when they co-taught a sixth grade general music class and were asked to create a musical for Reading Week. That first project, The Million Dollar Mystery, launched a prolific collaboration that continues to serve music educators seeking accessible, engaging repertoire for young voices.

Why we love this

Donnelly and Strid have spent decades writing directly for the singers in your rehearsal room, and it shows. This collection captures holiday warmth without resorting to overly complex harmonies or register-straining demands, making it genuinely singable for middle school choirs still building their ensemble skills.

What to expect

Warmth, accessibility, and genuine joy without sentimentality. The arrangements honor the familiar melodies singers already know while adding enough harmonic interest to keep the experience rewarding for both newer and more experienced singers.

Who it's for

Middle school and upper elementary choirs seeking straightforward holiday arrangements that don't require advanced reading skills or extensive rehearsal time. This works particularly well for programs introducing singers to two-part writing or preparing a winter concert with limited preparation weeks.

How to get the most out of it

  • Stagger your entrances during warm-up to help singers lock in the two-part blend before attempting full choral sound.
  • Record a simple piano accompaniment on your phone and share it with students who struggle to internalize their line independently.
  • Balance the parts by having singers stand in mixed formation rather than sectional seating; this forces active listening and tighter unison within each voice part.

How to use it

Slot this into a December concert as your approachable opener, building audience goodwill before moving into more challenging repertoire. The ten-page collection also offers enough variety to fill an entire holiday-focused rehearsal period for a younger or developing choir.

Skills your students will build

  • Maintaining a steady vocal line while hearing a different part
  • Reading and performing two-part harmony
  • Blending voices within a section
  • Building confidence with holiday performance repertoire
