About the Composer: Douglas E. Wagner

Douglas E. Wagner

Douglas E. Wagner studied music at Butler University and spent three decades as a high school music director before committing fully to composition. Since 1973, he has created over 3,500 works across choral, band, orchestral, handbell, organ, piano, and vocal genres.

Wagner's music has reached audiences through concert halls, television broadcasts, and radio programs worldwide, with more than seventeen million copies sold internationally. He resides in Indianapolis with his wife, Sandy.

Why we love this

Wagner brings both a composer's craft and a three-decade classroom perspective to holiday programming. This original melody offers a direct, singable entry point for including Jewish culture authentically in your winter concerts without relying on arrangements of folk melodies.

What to expect

The piece carries the warmth and joy of a festival celebration. Wagner's straightforward melodic approach makes it feel inviting and inclusive, grounded in the communal spirit of Hanukkah.

Who it's for

Directors seeking original choral repertoire that celebrates Hanukkah and Jewish heritage with music written at a Grade 3 accessibility level. This octavo fits middle school, high school, and community choir programs looking to expand their holiday selections beyond the standard secular Christmas fare.

How to get the most out of it

  • Emphasize the text clarity in the opening phrases so the festival theme registers immediately with your audience.
  • Balance the three parts evenly; SAB voicing at this level works best when no single line dominates.
  • Use the moderate tempo marking to allow singers to shape phrases without rushing through the rhythmic material.

How to use it

Pair this with instrumental interludes or other seasonal selections to build a multi-faith winter concert. Its moderate difficulty makes it rehearsable alongside more demanding repertoire without consuming disproportionate preparation time.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing in 3-part mixed voicing (SAB)
  • Clear diction in English text
  • Phrasing and shaping in moderate-tempo original material
  • Cultural awareness through authentic sacred music
