About the Arranger: Lisa DeSpain

Lisa DeSpain brings extensive experience in musical theatre and opera composition to her arranging work. Her operatic projects, including That Hell-Bound Train and Staggerwing, have earned her recognition through an Opera America Discovery Grant and an NEA Challenge America Award, while her musical theatre pieces like Storyville (created with Oscar-winning lyricist Kristen Anderson-Lopez) demonstrate her command of contemporary dramatic storytelling through music.
As a Professor of Music at LaGuardia Community College, DeSpain actively mentors emerging composers and regularly conducts masterclasses on composing for musical theatre and opera. Her arrangement work reflects the same theatrical sensibility and compositional sophistication she brings to her original creations.
Why we love this
DeSpain has captured the raw energy and attitude of Green Day's American Idiot without diluting what makes the source material so compelling. The six-minute medley format respects the medley's pacing demands while giving each song room to breathe, and her SATB writing sits comfortably on the voice without sacrificing the edgy character of the original arrangements.
What to expect
These four songs pulse with the defiance and wit that define American Idiot as a phenomenon. The medley captures the theatrical sweep of the musical production while maintaining the edgy, conversational immediacy that made Green Day's original album a generational touchstone.
Who it's for
Choirs seeking contemporary repertoire that connects with student singers and audiences alike will find this medley immediately engaging. Any SATB ensemble with moderate vocal ranges can access this material, making it suitable for high school choirs, community theatre groups, and collegiate programs looking to program music that lives on the Broadway stage.
How to get the most out of it
- Emphasize the rhythmic precision of your rhythm section and lower voices to maintain the driving pulse these songs demand; recording a click track rehearsal early helps lock the ensemble before adding expressive layers.
- Balance the soloists or featured sections carefully against the full choir; these songs thrive on dynamic contrast between intimate moments and explosive choruses.
- Lean into the contemporary vocal sound and attitude of the piece rather than achieving perfect blend; allowing some edge and character through will honor both the composer's arrangement and the original artists.
How to use it
This works beautifully as a contemporary centerpiece in a concert mixing musical theatre styles or as part of a pop choral showcase. It also serves as a powerful closer to a Broadway or musical theatre focused program, giving audiences the kind of modern energy that often gets overshadowed by classic musical theatre standards.
Skills your students will build
- Sustaining rhythmic independence while singing contemporary pop-influenced material
- Balancing articulation clarity with legit choral sound
- Navigating frequent dynamic shifts between verse and chorus sections
- Interpreting Broadway-level staging cues embedded in the arrangement
