About the Composer: Alice Parker

Alice Parker

Alice Parker studied composition and conducting at Smith College and later at the Juilliard School, where she began a transformative collaboration with conductor Robert Shaw. Together, they created hundreds of settings of American folksongs, hymns, and spirituals that remain standard repertoire in choral programs across the country. Her compositional output spans over five hundred works, including operas, song cycles, cantatas, choral suites, and individual anthems.

In 1985, Parker founded MELODIOUS ACCORD, INC., and dedicated herself to exploring the melody as the heart of vocal music. She authored influential books on melodic styles, choral improvisation, and church music, including the widely used The Melodious Accord Hymnal. Parker received the Robert Shaw Award from the American Choral Directors Association in 2013, the Harvard Glee Club Foundation Medal in 2015, and was named Distinguished Composer of the Year 2000 by the American Guild of Organists. She held honorary doctorates and served as the first Director Laureate of Chorus America.
