About the Arranger: Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht has shaped choral music education for over three decades, first as Director of School Choral, Vocal, and Elementary Publications at major educational publishers including Alfred Music, and more recently through her prolific output as a composer and arranger. Her catalog of more than 600 published works and 75 songbooks reflects a deep understanding of what works in rehearsal, combined with genuine musicality. She has led honor choirs at prestigious venues from Lincoln Center to Carnegie Hall, and her contributions have earned her continuous recognition through ASCAP Special Music Awards since 1987.

Albrecht holds degrees from Rollins College (B.A. in Music and Theater), the University of Miami (M.A. in Drama and M.M. in Accompanying), and has taught at Oakland University, Jersey City State College, and Meredith College. Her partnership with composer Jay Althouse and her leadership roles in national honor societies underscore her commitment to excellence in music education. In 2021, she received the Distinguished Alumna Award from both Rollins College and the University of Miami Frost School of Music.

Why we love this

This arrangement brings infectious energy without demanding technical heroics, making it an ideal opener for a concert or a morale boost during rehearsal season. Albrecht's gift for text-setting and her experience writing for student choirs shine through in music that sits comfortably in the voice while maintaining genuine musical interest.

What to expect

Uplifting and celebratory, with a rhythmic swagger that makes singers want to move. The music radiates optimism and captures that feeling of breaking free and moving forward with purpose.

Who it's for

Choirs of all experience levels will find this accessible and fun to perform. It works equally well with secondary school groups building confidence and younger ensembles discovering the joy of singing together.

How to get the most out of it

  • Keep the energy driving throughout. The title itself suggests momentum, so resist the urge to linger on sustained notes.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment to lock in the groove, especially if your ensemble tends to rush or drag with rhythmic figures.
  • Let the text drive the phrasing. Treat natural speech patterns as your guide rather than bar lines alone.

How to use it

Open a concert or assembly with this number to set a celebratory tone immediately. It also serves as an excellent warm-up or transition piece during rehearsal when you need to shift gears and energize the room.

Skills your students will build

  • rhythmic precision in syncopated figures
  • maintaining consistent ensemble energy and pulse
  • connecting text interpretation to musical shape
  • confidence in secular, contemporary choral style
