About the Composer: Patti Drennan

Patti Drennan

Patti Drennan shaped choral music education across Oklahoma for nearly three decades, teaching at West Mid-High School and Norman High School where her ensembles earned consistent superior ratings. Her work as an educator earned her Teacher of the Year honors and the Director of Distinction Award from the Oklahoma Choral Directors Association in 2004.

Now a prolific composer and arranger with over 425 published octavos and two million copies in circulation, Drennan remains active as a clinician and workshop presenter throughout the United States and Canada. She continues to write, arrange, lead music reading sessions for publishers, and direct composer weekends at churches nationwide. Her compositional reach extends to Carnegie Hall, and she performs regularly with her daughter Emily in both symphonic and chamber settings.

Why we love this

Drennan's setting captures intimate stillness without resorting to saccharine sentimentality. The piece sits comfortably for SATB choirs of varied experience levels while offering enough harmonic interest to engage singers who crave something substantive for concert or festival programming.

What to expect

A moment of quiet reflection before rest. The piece unfolds with gentle harmonic motion and transparent textures that invite listeners into a personal, contemplative space without demanding their attention.

Who it's for

Concert and festival choirs seeking repertoire with genuine expressive depth and manageable vocal ranges. This works well for groups that value clarity of text and emotional authenticity over technical display.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape phrases toward natural word stress rather than metric accent; the text should propel the music forward organically
  • Balance the upper voices carefully so the soprano line doesn't overshadow the tender quality of the whole texture
  • Allow silence to breathe between sections; rushing these moments undermines the piece's meditative character

How to use it

Place this toward the end of a concert as a peaceful interlude, or use it to open a set that explores themes of rest and restoration. Its modest length and accessible scoring make it an ideal pairing with other shorter secular works for a festival program.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustaining legit tone through longer phrase lines
  • Responding to textual emphasis over metric regularity
  • Balancing independent voice parts within a unified harmonic texture
  • Controlling dynamics in the middle and lower registers
