More about this title

About the Composer: Gordon Goodwin

Gordon Goodwin

Gordon Goodwin began composing full orchestrations in his head at age five, writing complete works rather than fragments. By thirteen, he had already completed his first big band chart, Hang Loose, signaling the arrival of an uncommon talent. His work in television and film scoring has earned him three Emmy Awards and multiple Grammy nominations, with orchestrations featured in Con Air, Bad Boys II, Remember the Titans, and Star Trek: Nemesis. He has written for and performed alongside artists including Christina Aguilera, Quincy Jones, Ray Charles, and David Foster.

Goodwin founded Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band in 2000, establishing himself as a bandleader and composer of contemporary jazz. The ensemble's debut album, Swingin' for the Fences, made history as the first commercially available DVD audio release and earned two Grammy nominations. His subsequent album XXL received three Grammy nominations, including Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album and Best Instrumental Composition. Through his Big Phat Band and his prolific output of charts and compositions, Goodwin continues to shape the sound of modern big band and jazz ensemble music.

Why we love this

These duets capture the energy and sophistication that define Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band sound, bringing that ensemble's spirit directly into a duet format. The TNT 2 software transforms practice from a solitary activity into a musical conversation, allowing you to trade with world-class players or isolate your part for focused work. A collection this engaging and flexible earns its place in recitals, festivals, and the everyday rotation of players seeking serious repertoire with real personality.

What to expect

These duets pulse with the swagger and precision of a professional big band. You'll encounter tight rhythmic unison passages, moments of melodic call-and-response, and harmonic sophistication that rewards careful listening. The soloistic demands of each part ensure neither voice takes a backseat; instead, every line feels essential to the conversation.

Who it's for

Advanced high school and college saxophonists seeking duet repertoire with genuine musical substance and contemporary flair. Players who have mastered standard classical duets and are ready for jazz language, swing interpretation, and the interpretive demands of Goodwin's compositional style will find immediate engagement here.

How to get the most out of it

  • Mute one saxophone part in TNT 2 to drill sections at performance tempo before slowing it down for technical detail work; the ability to switch approaches without reloading keeps momentum alive.
  • Lock into the rhythmic foundation Goodwin establishes in the opening measures of each piece; his writing rewards precise time feel with melodic and harmonic payoff.
  • Listen carefully to how Gordon Goodwin and Eric Marienthal voice their lines in the full recording, noting articulation choices and phrasing nuances that aren't always obvious from the page alone.
  • Explore the improvisation opportunities within each tune by studying the harmonic progression first; Goodwin leaves strategic space for solo development, and knowing the changes beforehand makes those moments count.

How to use it

Program individual selections at jazz festivals or recitals where serious saxophone duets make a strong impression. Work through the collection across an entire season as a parallel track to ensemble work, building sight-reading and jazz language skills in a focused, motivating format. Prepare pieces for small jazz concert showcases or studio recitals where the quality of the writing and the excitement of the material naturally attract audiences.
