About the Artist: Benjamin Harlan

Benjamin Harlan serves as Dean of the School of Church Music at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, where he shapes the next generation of church musicians. His compositions and arrangements for choir, organ, and handbells appear across the catalogs of major publishers, and his work has earned ASCAP recognition annually since 1990. He holds degrees from Baylor University (B.M. and M.M.) and SBTS (D.M.A.), and maintains active membership in the American Choral Directors Association and the Southern Baptist Church Music Conference.
Harlan's career reflects deep roots in church music leadership. He has served as Associate Professor at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and held positions as Minister of Music in several significant Baptist congregations across Louisiana. His prolific output and consistent recognition within both academic and ecclesiastical music communities demonstrate a sustained commitment to raising the quality of worship music available to church choirs of all levels.
Why we love this
Harlan's gift for orchestral color and dramatic architecture shows in every measure here. The piece moves with intention and purpose, giving your choir a statement opener or closer that feels substantial without demanding an unrealistic rehearsal investment. Two minutes of musical confidence.
What to expect
Jubilant and layered. The orchestral writing creates a feast of sound beneath the voices, with harmonic richness that feels both sturdy and elegant. There's grandeur here, but it never tips into sentimentality; the piece maintains dignity throughout its arc.
Who it's for
Choirs performing Christmas services who want an opening or closing number that commands attention without overwhelming a limited rehearsal schedule. Works equally well for choirs pairing voices with full orchestra or chamber ensemble.
How to get the most out of it
- Bring clarity to the orchestral texture by asking your singers to listen specifically to the instrumental lines that support their part. This isn't background music; the orchestra carries musical ideas your choir needs to hear.
- Shape the dynamic arc across the full two minutes rather than singing at one volume. Let the drama build gradually, then recede just as purposefully at the conclusion.
- Coordinate with your orchestra on the style of articulation early. Baroque Christmas texts often benefit from cleaner, more detached phrasing that lets the text shine through the density of voices.
How to use it
Reserve this for a prominent slot in your Christmas service. Its two-minute duration and dramatic profile make it ideal as the processional or recessional, or as the final choral moment before readings or instrumental interludes. It projects confidence without exhausting your singers or congregation's attention span.
Skills your students will build
- Balancing voice parts against dense orchestral texture
- Shaping long musical phrases across multiple dynamic levels
- Coordinating ensemble attacks and releases with instrumental accompaniment
- Sustaining focused vowels and diction through extended harmonic passages
