More about this title

About the Composer: Martha Mier

Martha Mier

Martha Mier has shaped early piano pedagogy as one of Alfred Music's most prolific educational composers since 1989. Her works span multiple series and styles, from jazz and blues to romantic impressions, and have earned consistent selection for the National Federation of Music Clubs Junior Festival Bulletin.

Mier's background includes a degree from Florida State University, ownership of a private piano studio in Lake City, Florida, and deep involvement in church music and collaborative performance. She holds state and national certification through the Music Teachers National Association, the Florida State Music Teachers Association, and the National Guild of Piano Teachers. As both clinician and adjudicator, she has led workshops internationally and at major conferences including the Music Teachers National Association Conference and the World Piano Pedagogy Conference.

Why we love this

Mier's writing at Level B demonstrates her gift for creating music that sounds genuinely musical while respecting where students actually are technically. Gold Doubloons captures attention with its character and energy without requiring students to stretch beyond what they've mastered at this stage, making it a rewarding piece that students ask to play repeatedly.

What to expect

Gold Doubloons evokes adventure and discovery, with musical imagery that invites students to imagine a narrative as they play. The piece balances approachability with genuine musical personality, keeping students engaged throughout.

Who it's for

Early elementary piano students working through Level B of Alfred's Basic Piano Prep Course will find this piece directly aligned with their current technical abilities. It serves students who are ready for music with character and story beyond basic technical drills.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish a steady tempo from the beginning; the character depends on rhythmic clarity, not speed.
  • Pay attention to any dynamic markings as opportunities to shape phrases and maintain listener interest across all four pages.
  • Practice hands separately first to secure the independence each hand needs, then gradually bring them together with focus on coordination at transitions.

How to use it

Include this piece in a student recital to showcase musicality and character development at the early elementary level. It also works well as a supplementary solo between method book assignments, offering students a chance to apply their emerging skills to repertoire that feels current and engaging.

Skills your students will build

  • Hand independence at the keyboard
  • Steady pulse and rhythmic accuracy
  • Phrasing and musical expression within early elementary range
  • Reading and executing dynamic markings
