About the Arranger: Donald Moore

Donald Moore

Donald Moore earned his Bachelor of Music in organ performance and Master of Arts in Teaching from Kent State University. He has spent his career as Organist-Choirmaster at Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, while establishing himself as one of America's most prolific choral musicians with over 500 published works across sacred, secular, educational, and popular genres.

Moore's arrangements and original compositions appear regularly in state and national music festivals. His work has earned him seventeen ASCAP Composers Standard Awards and recognition from the American Choral Directors Association as one of 400 historically significant composers in American choral music. His output spans choral octavos, organ and piano works, educational collections, and instructional books.

Why we love this

Moore's arrangement respects the carol's essential melody and harmonic character while crafting accessible, singable lines that work across mixed voices. The recorded accompaniment frees your singers from pitch anxiety and lets them focus on blend and expression, making this a reliable choice for holiday concerts where rehearsal time is tight.

What to expect

Warm and grounded. Moore's setting honors the carol's traditional character while lending it the harmonic depth and voice independence that modern choral singers expect. It feels both familiar and freshly arranged.

Who it's for

Mixed choirs preparing a Christmas concert or holiday service. This arrangement works well for groups ranging from community church choirs to select ensembles in schools, provided they have access to the recorded accompaniment track.

How to get the most out of it

  • Let the recorded accompaniment establish tempo and harmonic grounding during rehearsal; this allows singers to lock into the arrangement's rhythmic feel without fighting instrumental support.
  • Shape the text as dialogue between the carol's timeless message and your choir's collective voice; avoid a monotone delivery by treating phrase endings with gentle dynamic tapering.
  • Balance soprano and alto lines carefully in the opening sections so the melody sits clearly without overpowering the harmonic foundation underneath.

How to use it

Open a Christmas concert with this arrangement to establish a reverent mood; its accessibility means audiences recognize the carol instantly while your choir demonstrates musical care in the execution. Pair it with a contrasting festive carol or secular holiday selection to balance the program's emotional arc.

Skills your students will build

  • Blending mixed voice parts (SATB) in a traditional harmonic setting
  • Maintaining melodic clarity while supporting harmonic complexity
  • Singing with accompaniment as a rhythmic and harmonic anchor
