God Be In My Head was originally commissioned for the Singing Statesmen of the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire by their conductor, Dr. Gary Schwartzhoff. The work includes elements of chant and is accessible and easily memorized, while being expressive and meaningful. More about this title

About the Composer: Jackson Berkey

Jackson Berkey has established himself as a thoughtful composer for choral ensembles, with a particular gift for settings that balance accessibility with genuine musical substance. His work often draws on liturgical and hymnic traditions, creating pieces that sit comfortably in the rehearsal room while offering layers of meaning that reward careful interpretation.

Why we love this

The chant-influenced writing creates a foundation that students grasp quickly, yet the piece never feels simplistic. Berkey's text setting respects the sacred words while giving singers something genuinely expressive to communicate, and the SATB voicing distributes the melodic and harmonic interest generously across all four parts.

What to expect

Quiet and centered, with the weight of a prayer rather than a proclamation. The chant DNA gives it an unhurried quality, almost meditative, while the harmonic language keeps it grounded in contemporary choral practice.

Who it's for

Choirs at grades 2½ and above, particularly those seeking a reverent piece that doesn't demand extensive rehearsal time. Works equally well for high school choirs building confidence with a cappella singing and college ensembles looking for a thoughtfully crafted sacred work.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lean into the chant-like qualities by maintaining even line weight and avoiding unnecessary dynamic swells; let the text carry the expression.
  • Since this piece memorizes easily, use rehearsal time not to drill music but to develop interpretive nuance and vocal blend.
  • Balance the intimacy of the work by keeping ensemble size proportional; this rewards chamber-like precision over volume.

How to use it

This pairs naturally with other short sacred works in a concert focused on reflection and introspection, or stands alone as a concert opener that settles an audience into attentive listening. Consider programming it during the liturgical seasons that align with its text and spiritual intent.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing with linear phrasing independent of bar lines
  • Sustaining tone color across long syllables
  • Blend and balance in a cappella four-part voicing
  • Text-centered interpretation and emotional communication
