About the Arranger: Greg Gilpin

Greg Gilpin

Greg Gilpin is an ASCAP-recognized composer and arranger whose choral work spans concert halls and recording studios across the United States and internationally. His conducting has been featured at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Ryman Auditorium, Sydney Opera House, Royal Festival Hall, and Harpa Concert Hall. As Director of Educational Choral Publications for Shawnee Press, he shapes choral repertoire for ensembles at all levels.

Beyond music, Gilpin has expanded into professional organizing and financial coaching, earning certifications that have led to appearances on Fox and NBC affiliates and the television program "Hoarders." His 2021 film score for "Rosie's Rescue" won Best Score recognition. He is an active member of ACDA, NAfME, SAG-AFTRA, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

Why we love this

Gilpin's arrangement transforms this nursery rhyme into genuine choral material that works equally well in concert and contest settings. The recorded accompaniment frees you from needing an accompanist while maintaining the flexibility to rehearse without it, and the novelty factor makes it a crowd-pleasing opener or closer that doesn't sacrifice musical substance.

What to expect

A spirited, nostalgic romp through familiar melodies. The arrangement captures the whimsy of the original while adding harmonic sophistication and rhythmic snap that keeps the piece fresh for both singers and listeners.

Who it's for

Directors seeking a light, engaging piece that works for both concert programming and festival competition. This arrangement suits intermediate choral ensembles comfortable with part independence and looking for something that entertains without requiring extended rehearsal time.

How to get the most out of it

  • Encourage singers to commit fully to the character and charm of the piece; folk arrangements thrive on ensemble personality and joy rather than restrained delivery.
  • Balance the blend between voice parts so that any countermelody or harmonic color registers clearly without the melody getting buried.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment in full rehearsals to establish the groove and tempo, then work sections without it to build independence and intonation confidence.

How to use it

Program this early in a concert to set an upbeat, accessible tone and build audience connection before moving into more serious work. It also serves as an ideal festival selection where approachability and clarity of execution are assets.

Skills your students will build

  • Part independence and voice part security
  • Rhythmic precision and ensemble articulation
  • Stylistic interpretation of folk and novelty arrangements
  • Dynamic control within a light, energetic context
