Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht has shaped choral music in American schools for over four decades. As a conductor, clinician, and prolific composer, she has led honor choirs at prestigious venues including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and The Kennedy Center, while accumulating more than 600 published choral works and 75 larger musicals and songbooks. An ASCAP award recipient since 1987, she spent over thirty years directing school choral and vocal publications for major educational publishers, including Alfred Music. She holds degrees from Rollins College (B.A., 1976) in Music and Theater, and from the University of Miami Frost School of Music (M.A. in Drama, 1977; M.M. in Accompanying, 1979). In 2021, she received the Distinguished Alumna Award from both institutions.

Albrecht has also served in academic roles at Oakland University, Jersey City State College, and Meredith College, and as Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society. A Cleveland native, she continues to live in North Carolina with her husband, composer and arranger Jay Althouse.

Why we love this

This piece balances genuine gospel character with clear choral writing that builds momentum from intimate to jubilant. The structural arc—backing vocals during a ballad opening, eruption into a driven chorus, the appearance of a gospel standard, and a treble trio finale—creates genuine theatrical lift without requiring elaborate staging, though it integrates beautifully with choreography if you choose to add it.

What to expect

The piece radiates spiritual energy and joy. It opens with intimate devotion, swells into exultant celebration, and lands on a triumphant gospel hook that audiences remember long after the final note.

Who it's for

Choirs with a capable gospel soloist and treble voices strong enough to shine in the final trio section. This works well for groups seeking authentic gospel repertoire that doesn't require a full band setup but gains substantially from instrumental accompaniment.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the opening ballad with transparency; the soloist takes focus here, so the choir's supportive texture needs clean diction and disciplined dynamics.
  • Drive the rhythmic energy of the up-tempo chorus with a strong, grounded beat; this section should feel unstoppable and urgent.
  • Balance the treble trio showcase in the final verse so it blooms without drowning the harmonic support underneath.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment to lock the rhythmic pocket, especially important in gospel grooves where timing precision fuels the style.

How to use it

Program this for spring concerts celebrating faith and hope, or for services during Lent, Ascension, or All Saints Day observances. It pairs naturally with traditional spirituals or contemporary gospel works and works equally well as a concert opener or climactic closer.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing gospel style with authentic rhythmic feel and vocabulary
  • Supporting a featured soloist with responsive, flexible accompaniment
  • Balancing mixed-voice textures in SSAB voicing
  • Understanding structural contrast and sectional independence within a single piece
  • Integrating movement and staging into vocal performance
