More about this title

About the Composer: Richard L. Saucedo

Richard L. Saucedo

Richard L. Saucedo spent 31 years building the band program at Carmel High School in Indiana into a national powerhouse, where his ensembles earned consistent recognition at state, regional, and national competitions across concert, jazz, and marching categories. His Carmel Wind Symphony performed at the Music for All National Concert Band Festival three times and claimed the Indiana State Champion title in 2013, while the Marching Greyhounds maintained a 17-year streak in the BOA Grand National Championship top ten and won national championships in 2005 and 2012.

Beyond the high school podium, Saucedo has shaped competitive music at the highest levels, serving as brass arranger and composer for the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps during five DCI world championship runs and as music coordinator for the Blue Devils. He was named Indiana Bandmaster of the Year in 1998-99 and Outstanding Music Educator in 2010, then inducted into both the Music for All Hall of Fame (2015) and Drum Corps International Hall of Fame (2022). As a composer and arranger, he creates works across marching bands, concert bands, choral ensembles, and orchestras, and continues his impact through senior educational consulting for Music for All and Bands of America.

Why we love this

This fanfare rewards the confidence you've built in your ensemble by giving them something genuinely exciting to play. Saucedo's layering of rhythmic and tonal ideas creates textural depth without demanding extreme technical difficulty, so the piece sounds far more sophisticated than Grade 5 typically delivers. The closing wind and percussion swell is the kind of moment that reminds both performers and audiences why concert band music matters.

What to expect

A bright, commanding proclamation. The fanfare form builds momentum through accumulating rhythmic energy and shifting tonal colors, never settling into a single phrase before adding another layer. It culminates in an unmistakable moment of collective power as winds and percussion surge forward together.

Who it's for

Grade 5 concert bands ready to tackle a piece with genuine compositional substance. This works best for ensembles with solid fundamentals who can handle layered textures and need a statement-making opener or closer.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the overlapping rhythmic patterns by bringing out the woodwind figures in early sections while keeping brass layers supportive; this prevents the texture from becoming muddy as fanfare density increases.
  • Shape the final blossoming sequence with careful dynamic control from your winds and percussion, treating it as a unified climax rather than individual sections racing for volume.
  • Maintain crisp articulation throughout to preserve clarity in the extended fanfare form, especially when multiple rhythmic layers align.

How to use it

Open a concert with this to set an energetic tone and immediately signal that your band plays with intention. Alternatively, use it as a finale that leaves the audience with a strong, unified image of your ensemble's sound. The 2:10 duration fits neatly into any program without eating up rehearsal time on a single piece.

Skills your students will build

  • Executing sustained articulation across wind sections while maintaining tonal consistency
  • Balancing independent rhythmic layers to create composite rhythmic texture
  • Dynamic control and phrasing in extended fanfare structures
  • Ensemble balance in pieces with simultaneous brass and woodwind material
