About the Composer: Greg Gilpin

Greg Gilpin

Greg Gilpin has established himself as one of the most prolific and respected voices in contemporary choral music. An ASCAP award-winning composer and arranger, he has led performances at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Ryman Auditorium, the Sydney Opera House, Royal Festival Hall, and Harpa Concert Hall. As Director of Educational Choral Publications for Shawnee Press, he shapes the choral repertoire available to directors and students across the country.

Beyond the concert hall, Gilpin has diversified his creative pursuits into film scoring and professional organizing. His 2021 score for the short film "Rosie's Rescue" earned Best Score recognition, and he collaborated with opera singer Angela Brown on a world premiere arrangement of "What Child is This?" performed by the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir. A passionate educator and member of ACDA, NAfME, SAG-AFTRA, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Gilpin continues to teach, compose, and conduct with infectious enthusiasm.

Why we love this

Gilpin crafts holiday arrangements that sound elegant and memorable without demanding advanced vocal technique, making them genuinely achievable for developing choirs. The two-part writing sits naturally for mixed or female ensembles, and his harmonic sensibility brings freshness to familiar material that doesn't feel over-arranged or condescending.

What to expect

Warm and inclusive, with the kind of harmonic richness that makes familiar holiday material feel discovered anew. The arrangement sits in that sweet spot between simplicity and sophistication, allowing singers to feel genuinely musical without getting lost in complexity.

Who it's for

Middle school and high school choirs looking for a substantial yet approachable holiday selection. Community and youth ensembles will appreciate writing that respects singers' developing abilities while delivering polished, listenable results.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the melodic line between parts so the tune remains clear; in two-part writing, even subtle dynamic shifts between voices shape the phrase.
  • Shape the harmony by releasing consonants cleanly before moving to the next word, keeping the blend unified without sacrificing articulation.
  • Record a sectional run-through of just the second part before rehearsing together; singers often gain confidence when they hear their harmony line apart from the melody.
  • Consider the emotional arc across all 11 pages; this isn't a miniature, so find moments to breathe and let the arrangement's structural choices land with intention.

How to use it

Pair this with one or two shorter, higher-energy holiday pieces to create a well-paced choral set for winter concerts. At 11 pages, it anchors a holiday program nicely as a centerpiece moment that gives singers time to really settle into singing rather than rushing between selections.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and sustaining two-part harmony with independent voice lines
  • Blending vowels while maintaining individual articulation within ensemble sections
  • Controlling breath and phrase shape across longer harmonic progressions
  • Interpreting dynamic and textual nuance in arrangements of traditional material
