About the Arranger: Michael Kamuf

Michael Kamuf earned a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance and another in Music Education from the Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University, followed by a Master of Arts in Instrumental Conducting from George Mason University. His compositions and arrangements have been performed by prestigious ensembles including the Woody Herman and Glenn Miller Orchestras, the USAF Airmen of Note, and the US Navy Commodores, as well as acclaimed soloists such as James Moody, Eddie Daniels, and Sean Jones.
Kamuf spent three decades teaching instrumental music in Maryland public schools, serving for twenty-seven years as Director of Bands and Orchestras and Music Department Chairperson at John T. Baker Middle School in Damascus. Under his leadership, the Baker ensembles earned consistent high ratings at festivals and commissioned multiple works for young concert bands. As an exclusive writer for Belwin, he has published over 100 works across jazz, orchestra, and concert band catalogs, many of which have become standard repertoire for student ensembles. He currently directs the Mike Kamuf Little Big Band, a jazz octet based in the Baltimore and Washington, DC region.
Why we love this
Kamuf builds genuine momentum here by structuring the arrangement around three intensifying statements of the carol, which gives young bands a clear architectural goal and keeps both players and listeners engaged. The Grade 2.5 scoring balances accessibility with expressive demands, so your section leaders have something real to sink their teeth into without overwhelming emerging players. This is the kind of holiday piece that sounds thoughtful and substantial, not generic.
What to expect
The carol unfolds with quiet dignity before gathering warmth and strength through successive restatements, creating a sense of quiet reverence that builds into genuine joy. Players experience the satisfaction of shaping a theme that grows in intensity and emotional resonance with each new iteration, making them active participants in the arrangement's arc rather than passive executors of notes.
Who it's for
Young concert bands at the Grade 2 to 2.5 level who need repertoire that sounds polished and expressive without requiring virtuosic technique. Directors programming holiday concerts or winter festivals will find this accessible enough for emerging ensembles yet musical enough to satisfy an informed audience.
How to get the most out of it
- Pay close attention to the dynamic shape within each statement of the theme. Each repetition should build noticeably, so mark your parts with clear crescendo targets and ensure the ensemble understands they're climbing toward the final statement, not just repeating material.
- Balance the melody across your band so the carol's familiar character comes through clearly. Young players often bury the tune in harmonies, so isolate and rehearse the primary voice line first, then layer in the supporting parts.
- Work the transitions between statements separately. These moments determine whether the three iterations feel connected or disjointed, so rehearse them as deliberately as you would phrase changes within a single melodic line.
- Shape the ending decisively. With a carol this straightforward, the final cadence will either feel earned or abrupt depending on how the ensemble approaches the last few measures, so give that closure special attention.
How to use it
Place this early in a holiday concert program as a moment of musical substance that sets a reflective tone before transitioning to lighter fare, or use it as a standalone centerpiece in a winter festival that values traditional repertoire. It pairs well alongside secular holiday selections and works as a graceful closer to a concert that showcases the ensemble's growing musicianship.
