About the Composer: Katie O'Hara LaBrie

Katie O'Hara LaBrie is a composer, conductor, and cellist based in Northern Virginia whose work grows directly from her background in music education. She spent fifteen years teaching orchestra in Fairfax County schools before focusing on composition, earning a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from St. Olaf College and a Master of Music in Instrumental Conducting from George Mason University. Her pieces consistently appear on J.W. Pepper Editor's Choice lists and have been performed at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Directors Clinic and the American String Teachers Association Conference. In 2022, Yamaha recognized her as one of their "40 Under 40" honorees for her impact on music education.

LaBrie's compositions balance three priorities: pedagogical value, audience appeal, and genuine enjoyment for the performers. She founded the Fairfax Chamber Players and co-created "the Big IDEA" practice method, both reflecting her commitment to purposeful music-making. Her work draws inspiration from family, nature, and the real needs of student musicians in the classroom.
