About the Composer: Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht brings three decades of experience in choral publishing and education to her work as a composer and conductor. Since 1987, she has received annual ASCAP Special Music Awards and maintains over 600 published choral works in addition to 75 larger musicals and songbooks. She has conducted honor choirs at major venues including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and The Kennedy Center, and previously served as Director of School Choral, Vocal, and Elementary Publications for leading educational music publishers.

Her academic background spans music and theater; she earned a B.A. from Rollins College and both an M.A. in Drama and M.M. in Accompanying from the University of Miami. Albrecht has taught at Oakland University, Jersey City State College, and Meredith College. In 2021, she received the Distinguished Alumna Award from both Rollins College and the University of Miami Frost School of Music. She currently lives in Wake Forest, North Carolina, with her husband, composer and arranger Jay Althouse.

Why we love this

Albrecht's gift for writing accessible yet engaging choral music shines in this digital musical. The piece captures elementary singers' energy while remaining musically solid, and the winter theme gives your program a seasonal anchor without requiring elaborate staging. Tim Hayden's arrangement makes the part-writing transparent and the recorded accompaniment keeps rehearsals moving.

What to expect

Playful and contemporary, this piece channels the energy of the hit TV song while bringing it into an educational choral context. The writing invites singers to move naturally, freeze on cue, and feel the rhythm pulse through their bodies.

Who it's for

Elementary and middle school choirs working across grades 2 through 6 will find this digital musical manageable and fun. Teachers seeking a seasonal program piece that requires minimal technical staging will appreciate the straightforward production demands.

How to get the most out of it

  • Sync the movement cues carefully with the accompaniment track during rehearsals so singers internalize the pacing without depending on a conductor.
  • Layer the parts gradually by teaching melody first, then adding harmony as the singers gain confidence with the text.
  • Experiment with dynamics and facial expression during the frozen moments to create visual impact and maintain audience attention.

How to use it

Use this as a holiday or winter concert opener to capture immediate audience engagement, or as a standalone winter program that stands on its own without requiring a full musical production. Its short, high-energy format works well as a change-of-pace piece alongside longer choral works on a spring concert.

Skills your students will build

  • Responding to recorded accompaniment with rhythmic precision
  • Executing choreographed freezes synchronized to musical cues
  • Building confidence in unison and part-singing across a wide grade span
  • Understanding contemporary popular music through an educational choral lens
