About the Composer: Victor Labenske

Victor Labenske

Victor Labenske holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in piano performance from the University of Southern California, where he studied with Stewart Gordon, and a master's degree in piano performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music under Joanne Baker. He serves on the faculty at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, where he teaches piano and composition.

With over 700 published compositions and arrangements across multiple difficulty levels, Labenske has established himself as both a performing artist and an active composer. His work spans solo piano repertoire, recital suites, sacred collections including the Sunday Morning Companion library, and the Play Praise graded series. A chamber work commissioned by the Music Teachers National Association for the 2019 National Conference demonstrates his ongoing engagement with the musical community.

Why we love this

Labenske crafts a musically coherent journey through iconic American landscapes without relying on obvious geographical clichés. The suite balances descriptive writing with genuine pianistic interest, allowing intermediate players to feel the scope of these natural wonders while staying well within their technical reach.

What to expect

The Four Corners Suite captures the grandeur and intimacy of the American Southwest through keyboard color and melodic gestures. You will feel the journey unfold from one iconic landmark to the next, with moments of quiet introspection balanced against passages of sweep and majesty.

Who it's for

Intermediate pianists preparing for recitals or studio performances will find this suite rewarding for both technical development and musical storytelling. Teachers seeking American-themed repertoire that respects students' growing abilities without oversimplifying the compositional craft will appreciate Labenske's approach.

How to get the most out of it

  • Bring out the thematic connections between movements; the hint of 'America the Beautiful' should feel like a natural discovery rather than a moment of recognition.
  • Balance lyrical passage work with rhythmic clarity in the faster sections to maintain forward momentum across the 12-page arc.
  • Use dynamic contrast to distinguish each location's character; Pike's Peak and Zion will need different sonic approaches from the caverns and canyon.

How to use it

Program this suite as a complete set for a spring or fall recital, or select individual movements to anchor a themed concert celebrating American landscape music. The 12-page length and intermediate level make it a substantial anchor piece without dominating an entire recital program.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustained pedal control across varied textures and harmonic colors
  • Lyrical phrasing and legato technique in singing melodic lines
  • Dynamic shaping within movements to convey musical narrative
  • Comfortable navigation of intermediate-level hand independence
