About the Composer: Michael Oare

Michael Oare has spent over three decades shaping young musicians as Director of Bands at Great Bridge Middle School in Chesapeake, Virginia, where his ensembles earned superior ratings consistently, including 30 consecutive years performing grade 3 and 4 literature at the Virginia Concert Band Performance Assessment. His dual expertise in composition and education comes from his degrees at Old Dominion University, and his works have been featured in GIA Publications' respected "Teaching Music Through Performance" series.
Beyond the classroom, Oare has earned recognition as a two-time recipient of the National Band Association's Citation of Excellence and was named Chesapeake Public Schools' Middle School Teacher of the Year in 2016. He currently conducts the Bay Youth Orchestras of Virginia Concert Band and remains active as a composer, arranger, adjudicator, and performer with the Virginia Wind Symphony. His ASCAP membership reflects the quality and reach of his compositional output for young ensembles.
Why we love this
Fortitude delivers exactly what a Grade 2 band needs to open a concert with confidence: a piece that sounds significantly more sophisticated than its difficulty level suggests. Oare's instinct for pacing and dramatic contrast means your students will feel the power of building from whispered percussion to a full brass statement without wrestling with advanced technical demands.
What to expect
Fortitude opens like a held breath finally released. Soft, intense percussion creates anticipation before exploding into a powerful brass declaration, then pivots to reveal flowing woodwind conversations underneath. The piece feels both urgent and expansive, giving listeners the sense they've witnessed something substantial.
Who it's for
Grade 2 concert bands seeking a piece with genuine dramatic weight and clear programming impact. Directors looking for repertoire that challenges students musically without overwhelming them technically will find this especially useful.
How to get the most out of it
- Balance the opening percussion carefully so it draws listeners in rather than disappearing. This moment establishes the entire emotional arc of the piece.
- Shape the brass fanfare with clear ensemble tuning and rhythmic precision. The impact depends on every section locking together.
- Let the woodwind lines breathe independently while maintaining forward momentum. They're the connective tissue between the big moments.
How to use it
Open your next concert with this piece. Its clear narrative arc and impactful closing make it an excellent first selection that establishes tone and audience attention. It also pairs well in a program where you want to demonstrate that young bands can tackle sophisticated musical ideas.
Skills your students will build
- Dynamic control and shaping from soft to loud
- Ensemble balance across sections with contrasting textures
- Rhythmic precision through dramatic transitions
- Listening skills for entrances and dramatic moments
